QUINCY, Ill. - Senior outfielder JC DeMuri had a career day as the senior blasted four home runs in Saturday's (Mar. 31) doubleheader split with Maryville University. The Hawks won the first game 8-7 before falling 10-8 in the nightcap.
Play by Play:
Game 1
The Hawks got on the board early as DeMuri scored Troy Wehde on an RBI groundout in the bottom of the first inning.
The Saints responded by taking the lead in the top of the second inning on a two-run home run by Cody Klotz.
Maryville score two more runs in the top of the third on a two-run home run by Connor Markell to extend their lead to 4-1.
The Hawks used the long ball to get back in the game in the bottom of the third inning. Cody Birdsong scored TJ Tamaccio on an RBI groundout to cut the lead to 4-2. Troy Wehde and DeMuri hit back to back home runs to tie the game at 4-4.
In the bottom of the fourth, TJ Tamaccio scored Chandler Purcell on an RBI single to left to give the Hawks a 5-4 lead.
The Saints retook the lead in the top of the sixth. The Saints scored three runs on five hits to take a 7-5 lead over the Hawks.
Tamaccio led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a home run to right field to cut the Hawks deficit to 7-6. The next batter Brynn Martinez walked but was erased when Cody Birdsong grounded into a double play.
Troy Wehde walked to extend the game to DeMuri. On a 0-2 count, JC DeMuri launched a two-run walk-off home run to right field to give the Hawks their 16th win of the season.
Game 2
The Saints held a 7-1 lead after four innings of play.
The Hawks got a run back in the bottom of the fifth. Matt Hilmes singled to center field, scoring Chandler Purcell and cutting the lead to 7-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, DeMuri hit a three-run home run to cut the Saints to 7-5.
One inning later, DeMuri blasted his fourth home run of the day to give the Hawks an 8-7 lead on his second three-run home run of the game.
The Saints immediately responded, scoring three runs in the top of the eighth to retake the lead 10-8.
The Hawks were unable to make the comeback in the second game of the doubleheader, falling to the Saints 10-8.
