Hawks Baseball Splits with Maryville

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University baseball team split the first two games of a four-game series with Maryville University in Friday (Mar. 30).  The scores of the doubleheader were 4-3 and 5-1. 

Play by Play:

Game 1

Karl Hirsch logged five shutout innings in relief of starter Aaron Stone who left after just an inning of work due to an injury.  

Hirsch replaced Stone in the top of the second, inheriting runners on first and third and no one out.  Hirsch worked out of the jam to keep the Hawks within one run.  

The pitchers on both sides worked efficiently as both teams remained scoreless after the top of the first until the bottom of the sixth.  

The Hawks loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth.  A wild pitch allowed Brynn Martinez to score and tie the game at 1-1.  Jeff Hightower walked to load the bases for the second time.  

Michael Nielsen grounded out to bring home a run and give the Hawks a 2-1 lead.  

The Saints scored a pair of runs to take a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh.  

The Hawks responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the seventh.  Brynn Martinez doubled home Chandler Purcell to tie the game at 3-3.  

Michael Nielsen lifted a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth to give the Hawks a 4-3 lead heading into the ninth.  

Cole Crawford worked a perfect ninth to pick up his sixth save of the season.   

Game 2

In the second game of the doubleheader, it was a battle of starting pitchers.  QU starter Nick Stroud went five scoreless innings, striking out 10 Saints.  

The Saints were able to score five runs in the final two innings to take a 5-0 lead over the Hawks.  

JC DeMuri led off the bottom of the seventh with a double to right center.  Matt Hilmes followed with a walk to put a pair of runners on for the Hawks. 

Chandler Purcell singled home DeMuri to cut the lead to 5-1.  The Hawks loaded the bases after a Martinez walk.  With the tying run at the plate, the Hawks struck out twice to end the game.
