Baseball Falls to UIndy 8-4

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University baseball team fell to the University of Indianapolis 8-4 Monday (Feb. 26) afternoon.  

The Greyhounds struck first in the bottom of the first inning.  A two-run home run put the Greyhounds up 2-0 through the first frame.  

QU responded with a run in the top of the second inning.  JC DeMuri walked to lead off the inning. Chandler Purcell followed with a single to put runners on the corners.  Jake Viaene delivered a single through the right side to score DeMuri.  

In the bottom of the second, the Greyhounds began the inning with a groundout to short.  The next four Greyhounds reached base and Indianapolis extended its lead to 3-1.  

Another run in the bottom of the third pushed the Indianapolis lead to 4-1 after three innings of play.  

Zeros filled the scoreboard until the top of the sixth inning.  The Hawks placed runners on first and second with two outs in the top of the sixth.  Back to back singles by Ray Greco and Chandler Purcell cut the lead to 4-3.  Jake Viaene followed with a walk to load the bases.  The Hawks stranded the bases loaded after Nolan Snyder was set down on strikes.  

The Greyhounds answered in the bottom of the sixth with a grand slam to extend the lead to 8-4.  

Both teams went quietly until the top of the ninth.  Michael Nielsen doubled with one out, Brynn Martinez followed with a single to put runners at first and third.  Cody Birdsong flew out to right field to score Nielsen.  Jeff Hightower singled to extend the game.  Troy Wehde struck out swinging to end the game.  

QU falls to 2-4 on the season and returns home this weekend to take on McKendree Friday thru Sunday (Mar. 2-4) at QU Stadium.
