QUINCY, Ill. - Troy Wehde's home runs in the 3rd and 5th innings sparked the Hawks in their 6-4 win over the McKendree Bearcats Friday afternoon (Mar. 2).
Starter Aaron Stone worked out of a jam in the top of the first, as two Bearcats reached base in the first three batters. With runners on first and second, Stone got a strikeout and a fly out to end the threat.
The Hawks offense came alive in the bottom of the third. Junior third baseman Ray Greco led off the inning with a double to right center field. An error by the Bearcats second baseman allowed for Brynn Martinez to reach safely and Greco to score from second base. Cody Birdsong followed with a single to put runners at the corners.
Outfielder JC DeMuri brought home Martinez with a sac fly and the Hawks led 2-0. Wehde followed with a moon shot to right field to put the Hawks up 4-0 after three innings.
The Bearcats scored a run in the top of the fourth on a solo home run. This was the only run that Aaron Stone surrendered in his six innings of work.
The Hawks plated another run in the bottom of the fourth after Greco walked and stole second. Martinez followed with a double to score Greco and put the Hawks up 5-1.
QU scored its final run of the game in the top of the fifth. Wehde hit his fourth home run of the season, another home run to right field, to put the Hawks up 6-1.
Brendan Saak relieved Stone in the top of the seventh. Saak, who came into the game with a 0.00 ERA, surrendered three runs on three hits but kept the Hawks in front 6-4. Saak recorded a pair of strikeouts in his inning of work.
Alex Pribyl worked a scoreless top of the eighth and Cole Crawford tossed a shutout ninth to preserve the 6-4 win.
Troy Wehde finished 2-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Brynn Martinez was also 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Hawks improved to 3-4 on the year and have a doubleheader against McKendree tomorrow beginning at 12 p.m.
