Hawks Baseball Splits Doubleheader

QUINCY, Ill. - The #13 Quincy University baseball team split its doubleheader Sunday afternoon (Feb. 25).  The Hawks defeated Notre Dame College 18-0 before falling to the University of Indianapolis 5-3 in the second game of the day.

The Hawks struck early in game one, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning.  Brynn Martinez led off the Hawks bottom of the inning with a double to right center field.  Two batters later, JC DeMuri singled home Martinez to put the Hawks up 1-0.  Troy Wehde doubled to score DeMuri and gave starter Nick Stoud an early cushion.

Costly errors allowed QU to plate six runs in the bottom of the second.  The Hawks sent 10 men to the plate in the bottom half of the 2nd inning.  Troy Wehde provided the big hit of the inning with a three-run home run to make the score 8-0.

The Hawks scored another pair of runs in the 4th inning to push the QU lead to 10-0.

Stroud had a strong performance, tossing five shutout innings, allowing just four hits and striking out seven.  Each Hawks starter recorded a hit as QU was in complete control throughout the game.

The Hawks scored in every inning but the third and beat the Falcons 18-0.

Troy Wehde finished the first game 3-4 with 6 RBIs and 3 runs scored.

QU took on the Greyhounds of the University of Indianapolis in the second game of the doubleheader.

The Greyhounds struck first, plating a run in the bottom half the first inning.

The Hawks tied the game in the top of the third.  Brynn Martinez walked with two outs and stole second base.  He scored on an RBI single by Cody Birdsong.

Two Hawks errors in the bottom of the third allowed for the Greyhounds to retake a 2-1 lead.

Jeff Hightower tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth with his team-leading fourth home run of the year.

Indianapolis again responded, scoring two runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth.

Troy Wehde continued his hot day at the plate, belting a solo home run in the top of the sixth.  The Hawks looked to take the lead as they loaded the bases after Wehde's home run.  Nolan Snyder struck out looking to end the Hawks threat.

The Hawks left the bases loaded again in the top of the seventh as Jake Viaene struck out looking and Indianapolis still held a 4-3 lead.

Indianapolis added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh on a solo homer to stretch the lead to 5-3.

QU went down in order in the final two innings and fell to the Greyhounds 5-3.

Riley Martin fell to 0-2 on the year as he was credited with the loss.

Troy Wehde finished the day 5-8 with two home runs, seven RBIs, and four runs scored.  Jeff Hightower also finished 4-7 with four RBIs and three runs scored.

QU sits at 2-3 on the year and will take on Indianapolis tomorrow (Feb. 26) in a single nine-inning game.
