QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's volleyball team lost a heartbreaker to Fort Wayne Saturday evening (Feb. 24). The Hawks fell to the Mastodons 3-2 after winning the second and fourth sets.
The Hawks and Mastodons went back and forth to start the first set at 7-7. QU fell behind 14-9 midway through the first set. Fort Wayne used a 3-0 run late in the set to take a 19-12 lead and then scored seven of the next ten points to win the first set 25-16.
The Hawks gained an early 11-7 advantage in the second set and never trailed. The Mastodons fought back to cut the lead to 19-18. Back-to-back kills by Blake Sprecher and Brendon Estrada pushed the lead to 21-18. QU finished off the second set 25-23 with an Anthony Winter kill.
QU fell behind 9-5 early in the third set after several attack errors. The Hawks battled back and tied the game 10-10 after a Sprecher kill and an attack error by the Mastodons.
Fort Wayne used a 5-0 run to push their lead to 18-12. The two teams then traded points until the Mastodons finished off the set 25-19.
The two teams continued to battle early in the fourth set until QU used two Mastodon errors and a Shane McAdams kill to take a 12-8 lead. Fort Wayne then fought back and took a 17-14 lead.
The Hawks then went on a 5-0 run thanks to two Anthony Winter kills to take a 19-17 lead. The Mastodons capitalized on several Hawk errors to retake the lead at 24-23. The Hawks scored the final three points and won the fourth set 26-24.
In the decisive fifth set, QU won three of the first five points to take a 3-2 lead. Fort Wayne battled back and used a 4-0 run to take a 12-7 lead. The Mastodons never relinquished this lead and won the set 15-9 to take the match.
The Hawks were lead by Winter and McAdams, who both tallied 9 kills in the match. Sprecher also added 7 kills.
Pelegrin Vargas of Fort Wayne led all players with 17 kills in the match.
QU falls to 8-9 on the season and 0-6 in MIVA play.
The Hawks travel to Iowa for their next match against the Milwaukee School of Engineering Friday (Mar. 2) at 3 p.m.
