QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's volleyball team came back after a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Lincoln Memorial University Railsplitters three sets to two Friday night (Feb. 2).
The Hawks and Railsplitters were evenly matched during the first set before the Hawks pulled away with a 20-16 lead late in the first set. Lincoln Memorial was able to extend the match despite facing set point at 24-22. The Railsplitters took the next two points to tie the set 24-24. With the Hawks leading 26-25, Lincoln Memorial scored the next three points to take the set 28-26.
QU and Lincoln Memorial sat tied a 12-12 midway through the second set. A 3-0 run by the Railsplitters gave Lincoln Memorial a 15-12 lead. The Railsplitters pushed their lead to 23-17. The Hawks scored back to back points to cut the lead to 23-19 but the Railsplitters responded and took the set 25-19.
The Hawks looked to extend the match to the fourth set with a third set win. QU jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the third set. Four straight points for the Railsplitters tied the set at 7-7. QU took four of the next five points to grab an 11-8 lead.
Lincoln Memorial cut the lead to 12-11 in the third set. QU went on a 6-0 run to push the lead to 18-11. The Hawks held on for a comfortable 25-16 set win.
Both teams battled in the fourth set with neither team holding a lead larger than two points until the score read 18-18. QU scored seven of the last nine points to send the match to a decisive fifth set.
QU fell behind 8-5 in the fifth set. The Hawks scored the next eight points to take a 13-8 lead in the fifth set.
The Railsplittes would not go quietly, cutting the lead to 14-13. A service error by Lincoln Memorial gave the Hawks the match with a 15-13 set win.
Anthony Winter led the Hawks with 14 kills and
Shane McAdams added 13 kills.
Noah Randall finished with 27 assists for the Hawks.
QU is now 7-3 on the year and is back in action tomorrow against Judson University (Feb. 3) at 1 p.m. in Pepsi Arena.
