QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's basketball team dropped their first game of the Subway Classic on Friday evening. The Hawks fell 65-57 to Winona State despite ending the game on a 12-0 run.
Play by Play
1st Quarter
The Hawks got off to a slow start after two turnovers allowed Winona State to take an early 8-2 lead.
Michaela Gronewold knocked in a 3-pointer to bring the Hawks back within three points. Winona answered with a bucket to make the score 10-5 before
Taylor Hickey sunk a deep three to make it a 10-8 game.
Jessica Merino added an and-one to give the Hawks a 11-10 lead.
Ella Gobald got in on the action with a made 3-pointer to extend Quincy's lead to 18-14 later in the quarter.
Winona's Julia Silloway hit a shot from beyond the arc just before the buzzer to cut Quincy's lead to 21-19 after the first quarter.
2nd Quarter
Silloway started the next quarter with another long distance connection to put the Warriors ahead 22-21.
Winona made back-to-back baskets to move ahead 26-21, but Gronewold connected from deep to bring the score within two.
The Warriors ended the quarter with a 7-0 run. Allie Pickrain made two 3-pointers to extend the lead for Winona to 37-26 going into the half.
3rd Quarter
The Hawks started off the second half with urgency. QU came out by making an 11-3 run to bring the score to 40-37 favoring the Warriors.
Winona State ended the quarter on a 6-0 run and led 49-41 going into the final quarter.
4th Quarter
Quincy struggled with turnovers in the final quarter. During a three minute span, the Hawks turned it over five times.
Winona State took advantage and pulled ahead 65-45 with four minutes remaining.
The Hawks tried to march back into the game late. QU made a 12-0 run to end the game, but were unable to complete the comeback.
Quincy fell 65-57.
