QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's basketball team was within four points in the final quarter, but could not seal the victory. The Hawks fell 69-62 to Wayne State College.
Play by Play
1st Quarter
Both teams pushed the pace early in the game. The up-tempo pace led to three turnovers between both teams in the first three minutes.
Wayne State grabbed an early advantage 7-3, but
Alexa Low knocked in a mid-range jumper to make the score 7-5.
Wayne State made a three on the next possession, but
Taylor Hickey quickly responded with a 3-pointer of her own to bring the Hawks back within two.
Aleksandra Petrovic hit a 3-pointer with under a minute left in the 1st to make the score 16-15 WSC.
Jessica Merino knocked in a jump shot just before the end of the quarter to give QU a 17-16 lead going into the second quarter.
2nd Quarter
The Hawks started the 2nd quarter with a corner three by Merino. The Wildcats answered back with a 3-pointer of their own to make the score 20-19.
Quincy gained its largest lead at the time after another 3-pointer by Merino made the score 25-21.
Wayne State cut into the lead with one minute left in the second quarter. After a made basket by WSC, the Hawks led 28-27.
Wayne State ended the quarter on a 6-0 run and led 29-28 at the half.
3rd Quarter
Quincy got the first bucket of the second half.
Maddie Spagnola corralled an offensive rebound and made a 12-footer to put the Hawks up 30-29.
Lexi Doyle ended a 6-0 run by Wayne State after a short range shot.
Jess Merino gave the Hawks momentum after she took two charges on back-to-back possessions. Quincy capitalized with a basket. The score moved to 37-36 Wayne State.
The Wildcats answered by going on a 10-2 run to extend their lead to 47-38 with three minutes to go in the third quarter.
Quincy turnovers fueled the run. The Hawks committed seven in the third quarter to help Wayne State pull ahead.
WSC held a 54-45 lead going into the final quarter.
4th Quarter
Quincy came out with intensity in the fourth quarter. The Hawks made a 7-0 run to bring the Wildcats' lead to just two points 56-54.
Both teams exchanged baskets and WSC still held the lead 62-58 with two minutes remaining.
In the last two minutes, Wayne State was able to keep the Hawks at bay. The Wildcats answered nearly every made shot by QU to hold on to the lead. Wayne State College held on for the 69-62 victory.
