QUINCY, Ill. - A late goal by the McKendree Bearcats defeated the Quincy University Hawks 1-0 on Sunday (Oct. 7). The Hawks offense could not tie the matchup on senior day at Legends Stadium.
Play by Play
The Bearcats tallied the first shot of the game in just the second minute of play but the attempt was unsuccessful.
McKendree continued to apply constant offensive pressure but the Hawks continually held off the Bearcats attacks.
QU had a prime opportunity to score in the 29th minute. Senior
Gabby Orlando sent long shot towards the goal. The blast sailed just over the crossbar and the score remained 0-0.
The Hawks had a second scoring chance in the 33rd minute. A pass was sent into the box and senior
Abby Pulliam deflected the ball towards the net. The shot would have given the Hawks a 1-0 lead. Just as the ball was about to cross the line, a Bearcats defender cleared the ball away to keep the game scoreless.
The back and forth action continued for the remainder of the first half and the teams went into the locker rooms tied 0-0.
The Bearcats looked to pick up the intensity, adding three shots in the first ten minutes of the second half.
QU held of the initial surge of offense from the Bearcats and turned the tides.
In the 57th minute the Hawks had three shots and a pair of corner kicks but were unable to score on any of the chances.
Over 24 minutes ran off the clock before the Bearcats took the lead over the Hawks. A pass was sent into the box and Kate Bixby's shot found the back to the net to put the Bearcats up 1-0.
The Hawks desperately tried to tie the game but could not score the equalizer.
