Hawks Nearly Upset Missouri S&T. Fall 20-13

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University football team nearly pulled off an upset over the Missouri S&T Miners on Saturday night (Oct. 20). The Hawks fell to the Miners 20-13 in a hard fought battle. 

Play by Play

First Quarter

The Hawks defense showed up in a big way on Saturday night.  On the first possession of the game, QU forced a three and out.  The Hawks took over at their own 45-yard line after a wind-shortened punt.  

QU could not take advantage of the good starting field possession and were forced to punt.  Nathan Kewney pinned the Miners deep at their own 18.  

Missouri S&T marched the ball 81 yards to the Hawks one-yard line.  On first and goal, Peyten Chappel met the Miners running back behind the line of scrimmage for a loss of three yards.  A pair of incompletions led to a 21-yard field goal attempt.  Ben Styron's field goal sailed wide right and the Hawks took over at their own 20.  

On the Hawks possession, quarterback Andrew Rund's pass was intercepted and had his pass returned for a 36-yard touchdown and the Miners took a 7-0 lead with 4:22 to play in the first quarter. 

QU's next possession resulted in another punt and the Miners took over near the end of the first quarter.  

Second Quarter

On the eighth play of the drive, Nathaniel Reese made an acrobatic interception to give the Hawks the ball back deep in QU territory.  

With the ball at their own 10, QU moved the ball just five yards and was forced to punt following the interception.  

The Miners added to their lead with a field goal and led the Hawks 10-0 midway through the second quarter. 

After another Hawks punt, the Miners added another field goal to take a 13-0 lead.  

Andrew Rund had a second pass intercepted and the Miners took over at their own 41-yard line.  However, an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty pushed the ball back to the Miner 26.  

The Hawks defense answered the call and forced another turnover on an interception by Peyten Chappel.  Chappel returned the ball back to the Miner 26-yard line.  

QU looked to cut into the lead on a last-second field goal.  Michael Klotz's 38-yard field goal was blocked and the Miners held a 13-0 lead at the half. 

3rd Quarter 

QU took the opening drive of the second half 45 yards and resulted in a Michael Klotz 34-yard field goal with nine minutes to play in the third quarter.  

The Hawk defense continue to play tremendous defense and forced another Miners punt.  

Andrew Rund led the Hawks on a 13 play, 85-yard drive capped by a Rund 15-yard touchdown pass to Adam Hillis

The Hawks trailed 13-10 with just over three minutes to play in the third quarter.  

On the ensuing kick off Michael Klotz perfectly placed a short kick in-between the Miners returners and Shane Barrett recovered the ball at the Miners 38-yard line.  

QU's next possession resulted in a punt despite the good field position.  

4th Quarter

Missouri S&T mounted a 91-yard drive as Tyler Swart found Braxton Graham on a 17-yard touchdown pass to give the Miners a 20-10 lead.  

After a pair of punts, QU trailed by two scores with 10:23 to play in the game.  

The Hawks methodically moved the ball 84-yards and cut into the Miners lead.  Michael Klotz nailed a 30-yard field goal to cut the Miners lead to 20-13.  

QU's defense continued to hold one of the GLVC's best offenses in check and forced a punt to give the Hawks the ball back with a chance to tie the game.  

With 2:47 to play the Hawks took over with the ball at their 23-yard line.

The Hawks completed a 39-yard pass to Marlin Washington down to the Miners four-yard line with 1:21 to play and looked to tie or take the lead.  

Andrew Rund rushed for one yard down to the Miner three on the next play.  

QU was called for intentional grounding after the short rush and pushed back to the 11-yard line.  

With the ball at the 11-yard line, Andrew Rund fumbled on a rush and the Miners took over with 23 seconds to play.  

Missouri S&T kneeled the ball to secure its sixth win of the season.
