QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's volleyball team defeated both the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils and the Lourdes College Grey Wolves Friday night (Jan. 26) on the first day of the Judson Tournament.
The Hawks defeated Lawrence Tech 25-20, 23-25, 25-17, 25-15.
Anthony Winter led the way for QU, tallying 16 kills and three aces.
The Hawks defense was the strong point of the first match, forcing the Blue Devils to hit just .139 during the match.
QU, however, collected 49 kills and hit .284 in the match.
The Hawks controlled the first set with a well-rounded attack. QU finished the match with 13 kills and just three errors to take the opening set 25-20.
The second set saw QU commit seven attack errors and hit .103 in the set. The Hawks dropped the set 25-23.
QU was able to respond, particularly on the defensive end. The Blue Devils committed seven attack errors in the third set and the Hawks took advantage, winning the third set 25-17.
The fourth set would be the final set of the match. With the score 10-8 in favor of QU, the Hawks went on a 15-7 run to finish the match. The Hawks handily won the set 25-15.
This improved the Hawks to 3-2 on the year.
The Hawks completed the clean sweep of Friday's matchups with a 3-0 match win over the Lourdes College Grey Wolves. QU defeated Lourdes 25-18, 26-24, 25-19.
QU had just one attack error in the first set as the Hawks jumped out to a 16-8 lead over the Grey Wolves. The Hawks continue to hold this firm lead and won the opening set 25-18.
The Hawks fell behind 14-10 in the second set. QU battled back to take a 19-16 lead. Lourdes managed to tie the set at 24-24 when facing a pair of set points.
A pair of Grey Wolves attack errors allowed the Hawks to take the second set 26-24.
The Hawks and Grey Wolves were tied at 16-16 just over midway through the third set. A 3-0 Hawks run gave QU a 19-16 lead. Lourdes scored a pair of points to bring the score to 19-18.
A 5-0 Hawks run put QU in the driver's seat with a 24-18 lead.
Shane McAdams ended the match with a kill and gave the Hawks a 25-19 set win.
QU improved to 4-2 on the year.
Anthony Winter finished the day with 32 kills to lead QU.
The Hawks take on Campbellsville University and Clarke University tomorrow (Jan. 27) at 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to complete the Judson Tournament.
