QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's volleyball team fell to the St. Ambrose Fighting Bees in five sets Monday night (Jan. 22).
The Hawks fell to the Bees 22-25, 21-25, 25-21, 25-20, 15-8.
QU and St. Ambrose stood tied at 9-9 in the first set. The Hawks took seven of the next nine points and led 16-11. The Bees battled back and cut the lead to 17-16 and took the lead 21-20 late in the set. The Hawks scored three straight points and led 23-21. The Hawks took the first set 25-21.
The Hawks scored the first four points of the second set and led 4-0. St. Ambrose responded by scoring the next five points and took the lead 5-4. QU scored 10 of the next 13 points. QU held a 22-15 lead late in the second set. The Bees were able to cut the score to 22-20 but the Hawks were able to hold on for a 25-21 win.
QU looked to take the match, leading 20-17 late in the third set. The Bees would not go quietly, winning the next seven points to take a 24-20 lead. St. Ambrose eventually won the third set 25-21.
The Hawks and the Bees battled back and forth throughout the fourth set. The score stood tied at 18-18 before St. Ambrose went on a 5-0 run to grab a 23-18 lead. QU was unable to make a comeback and fell in the fourth set 25-20.
The fifth and deciding set stood tied at 5-5. The Bees were able to grab the momentum and scored the next three points to take an 8-5 lead. With QU trailing 11-8 the Bees scored the final four points and took the set 15-8.
Shane McAdams led the Hawks with 17 kills and
Thane Fanfulik totaled 36 assists.
The Hawks fall to 2-2 on the year and will be participating in the Judson Tournament Friday and Saturday (Jan. 26-27) with a pair of games each day.
