QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's soccer team fell to Grand Valley State University 2-0 Wednesday afternoon. Grand Valley came into the match ranked as the number five team in the country.
The Lakers came out firing on offense, applying constant pressure to the Quincy defense. In the 10th minute, Tracy McCoy stepped in front of a pass just beyond midfield and took off on a breakaway. Just inside the box McCoy took a shot that found the bottom left corner of the net to put Grand Valley up 1-0.
Grand Valley continued to press the Quincy defense for the remainder of the first half.
Megan Swanson (St. Charles, MO / St. Dominic) kept the game tight, making five saves in the first half.
The Hawks managed just two shots in the first half against the Grand Valley defense.
After the first 45 minutes of play Grand Valley led 1-0.
The Hawks had a chance to tie the game when Maddie Bauer (O'Fallon, MO / St. Dominic) got behind the Laker defense on a break away. Bauer's shot went just high of the goal and the Lakers held their 1-0 lead.
The Hawks halftime adjustments slowed the Grand Valley attack and changed the pace of play for the remainder of the contest.
In the 58th minute, a through ball was sent inside the box where Gabriella Mencotti was fouled and was awarded a penalty kick.
Mencotti's shot found the bottom left corner of the net and put the Lakers on top 2-0.
Maddie Bauer had another chance to score off a header in the 76th minute. Her header hit the crossbar and was cleared away before another opportunity to score.
Grand Valley would hold the lead for the remainder of the game and improve to 7-2 on the season.
QU fell to 6-2 on the season and returns home Friday to take on conference opponent UMSL at 5:00 p.m. at Legends Stadium
