QUINCY, Ill - The Quincy University women's volleyball team opened it season in the Ferris State Invitational today (Sept.1). The Hawks dropped a pair of matches to Upper Iowa and Northern Michigan.
In the first match of the day, the Hawks fell to Upper Iowa in straight sets 25-17, 25-21, 25-12. Upper Iowa scored the first five points of the first set to take a quick 5-0 lead. The Hawks were able to fight back, cutting the lead to 8-6 after two attack errors by Haley Weepie of Upper Iowa.
The Peacocks extend their lead with another six point run led by Anna Winter to extend the lead to 17-8. The Hawks could not cut into the lead any further and dropped the first set.
The Hawks were able to take a 18-16 lead in the second set. Upper Iowa responded with three straight points to retake the lead 19-18. QU tied it back up on a kill by
Taylor McMonagle (Green Bay, WI / Denmark) at 19-19. The Hawks trailed the Peacocks 23-21 before Upper Iowa scored the last two points of the match to take the second set.
Upper Iowa used a seven and an eight point run to take a 15-2 lead in the third set. The Hawks were able to trim the lead to 18-10 in the third set. The Hawks couldn't trim the lead any further and lost the third set 25-12.
Taylor McMonagle led the Hawks with 10 kills in the first match.
The second match of the day saw the Hawks take on the Northern Michigan Wildcats. The Hawks jumped out to an early lead in the first set and beat the Wildcats 25-20.
In the second set, QU held a 17-16 lead after a kill by senior Bekah Raebel (Waterford, WI / Waterford Union). QU dropped a pair of points on attack errors while trailing 19-18. Along with two services aces, the Wildcats were able to put the second set out of reach.
The Hawks took another lead late into the third set. QU lead the Wildcats 20-19 after a kill by
Jessica Licurgo (Goodyear, AZ / Sandra Day O'Connor). Another pair of attack errors by the Hawks gave Northern Michigan a 22-21 lead. The Hawks couldn't regain the lead and fell 25-22 in the third set.
The fourth set saw the Hawks fall behind early but battle back to tie the game at 13-13 on a kill by
Lucy Grenda (Westfield, IN / Westfield). The Hawks fell behind again but
Lucy Grenda collected two more kills to trim the lead to 17-16. QU couldn't regain the lead and lost in the fourth set 25-19.
The Hawks will play two more matches tomorrow (Sept. 2) against Cedarville and Ferris State.
