Hawks Homer Twice In Ninth To Beat Warriors

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team has put together an incredible run of come-from-behind wins in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional, but none more dramatic than on Sunday (May 21) afternoon.

The No. 3-seed Hawks trailed No. 6-seed Wayne State, 5-3, going into the top of the ninth inning, but junior Brynn Martinez (Southwest Ranches, Fla.) hit a two-run homer to tie the game and junior J.C. DeMuri (Manchester, Mo.) walloped a three-run dinger to give the Hawks an 8-5 lead that junior closer Cole Crawford (Wilton, Iowa) nailed down in the bottom of the ninth.

All three of Quincy's wins have been comeback victories won in the eighth or ninth innings. The Hawks have entered an inning with the lead just two times in the NCAA Tournament.

Quincy (35-21) will now play host and top-seeded Northwood at 11 a.m. CT on Monday (May 21) for the regional championship and a trip to the Division II World Series in Grand Prairie, Texas. QU will need to beat the Timberwolves twice (46-11) on Monday while one win will suffice for Northwood.

The Hawks got a gutsy start from freshman Jimmy McDonald (Roselle, Ill.), making just his third collegiate appearance and his first since March 4 (81 days). McDonald gave the Hawks five innings, giving up four runs (three earned) and did not walk a batter.

Wayne State took the lead in the second on a solo homer by JT Conti and a sac fly, but the Hawks came back in the top of the third as DeMuri chipped in an RBI single and junior Troy Wehde (St. Charles, Mo.) followed with a two-run double down the right-field line to give the Hawks a 3-2 lead.

The Warriors tacked on single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take a 5-3 lead with three innings to play.

Wayne State got five innings of shutout relief from Josh Nelson, who turned the ball over to closer Tyler Tompson. Sophomore TJ Tamaccio (Boca Raton, Fla.) quickly drew a walk with a full count. Two batters later, Martinez yanked the first pitch he saw over the wall in right-center, tying the game at 5.

Seniors Dominic Miles (Quincy, Ill.) and Jake Walters (St. Louis, Mo.) each followed by drawing walks. Each of them reached base three times in the game. DeMuri got to a 1-1 count before crushing his go-ahead three-run homer, sending the Hawks dugout into a frenzy. QU still rallied after that, but left the bases loaded.

Crawford came on for the ninth, retiring the side in order with two strikeouts to end the game and send the Hawks into the final day of the regional.

Freshman Alex Pribyl (Anoka, Minn.) earned his first collegiate win (1-1) with 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Senior lefty Tommy Hager (O'Fallon, Mo.) gave the Hawks 2 1/3 innings in relief, striking out four and giving up just one run.

Miles was 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored. DeMuri went 2-for-5 with a homer, four RBI and two runs. Wehde was 2-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI. Martinez went 1-for-2 with a homer, a walk and two RBI.

The Hawks have twice played for a regional title, falling to SIU-Edwardsville, 15-14, in 1997 and to Ashland, 11-10, in 1999.
