WORLD SERIES BOUND! Hawks Win Two For Regional Title

MIDLAND, Mich. – The Quincy University baseball team is going to the NCAA Division II World Series for the first time in school history after sweeping Northwood by scores of 4-3 and 2-0 on the final day of the Midwest Regional.

The Hawks (37-21) climbed back from the consolation bracket, winning three games over two days to advance to Grand Prairie, Texas. QU is scheduled to play Sunday (May 28) against Colorado Mesa.

Quincy got incredible pitching performances through all 18 innings on Monday. Senior Graham Spraker (Tucson, Ariz.) worked 6 1/3 innings on two-day rest and gave up just three runs, leaving the game tied at 3. Senior lefty Hunter Haynes (Mexico, Mo.) struck out seven in 2 2/3 innings of relief.

The Hawks snapped the 3-3 tie in the bottom of the eighth. Senior Jack Klages (St. Louis, Mo.) reached on a pop-up that the shortstop could not locate and it fell on the outfield grass. Pinch-runner Cole Cimarolli (Edwardsville, Ill.) came around to score on a single by sophomore TJ Tamaccio (Boca Raton, Fla.) after the right fielder's throw missed the cut-off and skipped through the infield.

Haynes struck out the side in the ninth to seal the win and send the championship into a second game.

Northwood started the game with a run in the first inning, but Quincy got two back in the bottom half as senior Dominic Miles (Quincy, Ill.) walked and scored on a triple by senior Jake Walters (St. Louis, Mo.). Sophomore Nolan Snyder (St. Louis, Mo.) followed with an RBI single to give the Hawks the lead.

Junior Troy Wehde (St. Charles, Mo.) made it 3-1 in the third, leading off with a solo home run down the right field line, his 12th of the season.

Northwood scored two off Spraker in the sixth on Daniel Pulver's two-run double.

Haynes (9-1) earned the win with his one-hit relief over 2 2/3 innings. Max Bain (1-1) took the loss for the Timberwolves, allowing an unearned run in relief. The Hawks touched up NCBWA Midwest Region Pitcher of the Year Tyler Jandron for three runs over seven innings.

Snyder and Tamaccio each had two hits in the game.

In the final game on Monday, the Hawks got incredible pitching performances from a pair of freshmen. Left-hander Riley Martin (Salem, Ill.) worked six shutout innings with three strikeouts. He walked three and gave up four hits, going on three-days rest. The left-hander matched zeros with Ian Dimitrie, who kept the Hawks off-balance as the game went into the seventh scoreless.

Klages finally got to Dimitrie in the seventh inning, hitting a solo home run with two outs to break the scoreless tie. It was Klages' fifth homer of the season.

Martin turned it over to fellow rookie Alex Pribyl (Anoka, Minn.), who worked two perfect innings to bridge the gap to junior closer Cole Crawford (Wilton, Iowa).

The Hawks gave the bullpen an insurance run in the top of the eighth, loading the bases with one out. Junior J.C. DeMuri (Manchester, Mo.) slugged a sac fly to bring in the Hawks' second run.

The Timberwolves loaded the bases off Crawford with two outs in the ninth, but he got pinch-hitter Brooks Ullery to pop out to Tamaccio at third to start the Hawks' dogpile – their second in two weeks after winning the GLVC Championship last Sunday.
