Hawks Overcome Six-Run Deficit To Beat Pumas 9-8

MIDLAND, Mich. – The Quincy University baseball team overcame a six-run deficit to defeat Saint Joseph's, 9-8, on Friday (May 20) night/early Saturday morning to remain in the winner's bracket in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional at Gerace Stadium.

The game started at 8:30 p.m. ET and junior Cole Crawford (Wilton, Iowa) recorded the final out at 12:44 a.m. to finish the four-hour, 14-minute game.

No. 3-seed Quincy (34-20) will now play host and top-seed Northwood (45-11) on Saturday at 5 p.m. CT for the chance to advance to Monday's regional championship game.

Friday's game was scoreless until the third inning when the Hawks were hurt by defensive issues. Noah Powell reached on an error to start the inning before senior Graham Spraker (Tucson, Ariz.) struck out the next two hitters. The No. 7-seed Pumas (34-21) then drew a pair of walks to load the bases. An infield dribbler led to the first run and a wild pitch scored another. Chase Fieldhouse followed with a two-run single and Powell capped the scoring with an RBI hit.

The Pumas made it 6-0 with another run in the fourth before Quincy nailed down its first two runs in the fifth. The Hawks loaded the bases with no outs for junior Troy Wehde (St. Charles, Mo.) who poked a ball through the hole to plate senior Dominic Miles (Quincy, Ill.). Sophomore Chandler Purcell (Waterloo, Ill.) then reached on an error to score another run, but the Hawks left the bases loaded.

Saint Joseph's got both runs back in the bottom of the fifth to stretch the lead to 8-2.

That's when the QU rally started. The Hawks loaded the bases with no outs for junior J.C. DeMuri (Manchester, Mo.), who delivered an RBI single. Wehde followed by reaching on a fielder's choice to make it 8-4. Sophomore Nolan Snyder (St. Louis, Mo.) had an infield single that scored a run before a groundout left runners at first and second with two outs.

Sophomore Carter Naughton (Mundelein, Ill.), replacing an injured TJ Tamaccio (Boca Raton, Fla.), then poked an RBI single the other way to cut the deficit to 8-6. Senior Jack Klages (St. Louis, Mo.) followed with his own RBI rip to bring it to within one. The final blow of the inning came as junior Brynn Martinez (Southwest Ranches, Fla.) slapped a single into left to score Naughton and tie the game.

The QU bullpen locked in from there. Sophomore lefty Aaron Stone (Palmyra, Mo.) worked a 1 1/3 scoreless innings before turning it over to freshman William Sanchez (Miami, Fla.), who escaped a two-on jam in the sixth. Sanchez pitched a perfect seventh inning to keep the game tied.

In the top of the eighth, the Hawks generated the game-winner. Snyder reached on an infield hit and went to second on a wild pitch. Purcell then came up big on a 3-2 pitch, going the other way with a double down the left field line to score Snyder and give Quincy a 9-8 lead.

Freshman Alex Pribyl (Anoka, Minn.) came on for the eighth and got into a bases-loaded jam with two outs. Crawford came on an forced Josh Handzik to line out to left field.

Crawford had electric stuff in the ninth inning, making just nine pitches and blowing away Jeff Hightower to finish the game.

Sanchez (2-0) earned the win with his perfect 1 1/3 innings of relief. Crawford earned his 10th save of the season. Lukas Jaksich (3-4) suffered the loss for the Pumas, who will play Kentucky Wesleyan at 1:30 p.m. CT on Saturday.

Spraker did not factor in the decision, giving up five runs – all unearned – on three hits and three walks with four strikeouts in three innings. He made 78 pitches, 44 for strikes.

Snyder led the offense, going 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Walters, DeMuri and Wehde had two hits apiece as the top five in the QU order went a combined 10-for-24 with four RBI and six runs scored.
