Hawks Miss Opportunities in 5-3 Loss To Northwood

MIDLAND, Mich. – The Quincy University baseball team was not able to capitalize on its offensive opportunities and lost to host Northwood, 5-3, on Saturday (May 20) evening at Gerace Stadium in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional.

The Hawks (34-21) now play Sunday (May 21) at 2:30 p.m. CT against the winner of the Wayne State-Kentucky Wesleyan game, which starts at 11 a.m. CT. Quincy will have to run the table in three straight games to win the regional and advance to the Division II World Series in Grand Prairie, Texas. Northwood (46-11) will have Sunday off and plays in the regional championship game Monday.

Quincy fell behind in the first inning as back-to-back doubles brought in the first run and an RBI groundout brought in a second against senior starter Mark Niebrugge (Effingham, Ill.). The right-hander escaped further damage by inducing a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning.

The Hawks loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning, but only scored one run on a double play, cutting the deficit in half, 2-1. The Hawks hit just 2-for-15 with runners in scoring position and 3-for-21 with runners on base. QU had the leadoff man aboard in five of the nine innings.

Quincy tied the game in the third as senior Jake Walters (St. Louis, Mo.) doubled and eventually scored on an RBI groundout by junior Troy Wehde (St. Charles, Mo.).

Northwood quickly regained the lead on Ryan McClelland's two-run double in the fourth inning.

QU cut the lead in half again with two outs in the fourth inning as Miles slapped an RBI single to left field, scoring junior Matt Hilmes (Carlyle, Ill.), who doubled with one out.

Niebrugge pitched around a walk in the fifth, but he gave way to freshman lefty Brandan Moriarty (Westminster, Colo.) in the sixth. Making just his seventh appearance of the season, Moriarty gave up just a single in his two innings of scoreless work.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Hawks spoiled their best opportunity of the night, loading the bases with two walks and an error with no outs. Northwood reliever Matt Stojkov induced two pop outs and got a strikeout to end the inning and keeping the one-run advantage.

The Timberwolves added an insurance run in the eighth off freshman William Sanchez (Miami, Fla.). Senior southpaw Hunter Haynes (Mexico, Mo.) allowed his inherited runner to score, but he stranded two runners on the bases.

Senior Dominic Miles (Quincy, Ill.) reached base for the fourth time by singling to start the ninth inning, but Stojkov retired the next three batters in order to end the game.

Niebrugge (7-5) was saddled with the loss, giving up four runs on seven hits in five innings. He walked five and struck out three. Haynes did not allow a run in 1 2/3 innings. Stojkov (6-0) earned the win by pitching 5 1/3 scoreless relief innings.

Miles was 2-for-3 with two walks, an RBI and a run while Walters went 2-for-4 with a double and a run.

Should the Hawks beat Wayne State or Kentucky Wesleyan on Sunday, they will need to beat Northwood twice on Monday for the regional title and a trip to the Division II World Series.
