Tennis Teams Pick Up GLVC Wins Over Cardinals

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's and women's tennis teams each earned Great Lakes Valley Conference wins over William Jewell on Saturday (April 8) at Reservoir Park. The women won in a clean sweep, 9-0, while the men came away with a 6-3 victory.

The QU women (8-10, 2-3 GLVC) lost just three total games over their three doubles matches as the top two teams won by 8-0 scores. Senior Amy Kuhle (Decatur, Ill./St. Teresa) and junior Sydney Lynch (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart Griffin) defeated Claire MacKay and Hannah Waine at the No. 1 spot.

At No. 2 doubles, junior Rebecca McIsaac (Fairview Heights, Ill./Belleview East) and senior Elizabeth Kuenzi (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) swept Jade Moore and Meredith Houk.

Senior Morgan McGinnis (Edwardsville, Ill.) and freshman Rita Kanaeva (Toronto, Canada) beat Whitney Holloman and Caroline Lane, 8-3, at No. 3 doubles.

Quincy also did not drop a set in singles play to the Cardinals (5-8, 0-3 GLVC). Kuhle was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over MacKay at the top position. Kuenzi beat Waine, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 2 singles.

Lynch defeated Holloman, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3 singles while McIsaac took a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Houk in the fourth spot. At No. 5 singles, McGinnis took down Moor, 6-2, 6-1, and at No. 6 singles, Kanaeva toppled Lane, 6-2, 7-6.

On the men's side, the Hawks (2-12, 2-2 GLVC) took a 2-1 lead into singles play. Sophomore Danyil Vayser (Round Rock, Ill./Gymasium "Konsul" #86) and junior Wyatt Pauley (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) beat Caul Pearson and Hayden Fulk, 8-3, at No. 2 doubles.

The tandem of junior Michael Lesko (Columbia, Ill./Gibault Catholic) and junior Ryan McMillan (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) knocked off Brian Wohlers and Marco Martinez, 8-3.

Senior Erik Eldagsen (Santa Coloma de Cervello, Spain/IPSE/East Central) and junior Collin Adams (Quincy, Ill.) each avenged a doubles defeat with wins in singles play. Eldagsen was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Bjorn Myers at No. 2 singles and Adams beat Wohlers by an identical score at No. 4 singles.

Lesko earned a 6-4, 7-5 win over Fulk at No. 5 singles and freshman Patrick Anderson (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) beat Martinez in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 10-4.

The women's team returns to action on Wednesday (April 12) at 4 p.m. at Coe while the men's next match is Friday (April 14) at 2 p.m. at Drury. The women's team will also play the Panthers that day.
