Quincy Rallies In Seventh To Sweep Rockhurst

QUINCY, Ill. – A day that started with an 8 a.m. departure from Quincy ended almost 16 hours and two wins later as the QU baseball team rallied in the seventh inning of Game 2 to sweep a doubleheader from host Rockhurst, 12-5 and 6-3, on Friday (April 28).

The original start time for Friday's doubleheader (already pushed up from a Saturday start) was 3 p.m., but heavy rains forced the first pitch back to 6 p.m. as the teams enjoyed late night baseball in Kansas City.

Quincy (27-16, 16-6 GLVC) kept hold of its two-game stranglehold on the GLVC West over Drury (14-8 GLVC), which swept Maryville Friday.

After taking an early lead over Rockhurst in Game 2 on an RBI single by junior Troy Wehde (St. Charles, Mo.), the host scored three in the third inning to take a 3-1 advantage over QU.

The score stayed that way until the sixth when Wehde doubled, went to third on a single by sophomore Nolan Snyder (St. Louis, Mo.) and scored on a groundout by junior Matt Hilmes (Carlyle, Ill.).

Senior left-hander Hunter Haynes (Mexico, Mo.) came on in relief in the sixth and retired the side in order with two strikeouts.

Four pitches into the seventh inning, Quincy tied the score at 3 as junior Brynn Martinez (Southwest Ranches, Fla.) doubled down the right field line, scooted to third on a groundout and scored on a single by senior Jake Walters (St. Louis, Mo.).

The rally continued as junior J.C. DeMuri (Manchester, Mo.) singled and he and Walters moved into scoring position on a groundout. Senior Jack Klages (St. Louis, Mo.) followed with a double down the left field line to give QU a 5-3 lead. Klages would eventually score on a wild pitch to make it 6-3.

Haynes (8-1) accomplished the rare feat of striking out four batters in the seventh inning as one of them reached on a wild pitch. He struck out six in his two hitless relief innings to earn the win. Freshman Riley Martin (Salem, Ill.) got the start and gave up three runs on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings. Freshman Alex Pribyl (Anoka, Minn.) allowed just one hit in 2 1/3 relief innings.

Walters led the offense, going 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and RBI. DeMuri, Wehde and Martinez also had two hits as QU out-hit Rockhurst, 12-4.

DeMuri gave QU a 1-0 lead in the first inning of Game 1 with an RBI single and an RBI hit by senior Dominic Miles (Quincy, Ill.) in the second gave QU a 2-1 lead. Quincy made it 3-1 in the fourth on Walters' RBI double before Rockhurst cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning.

Quincy pulled away in the seventh as Wehde ripped an RBI single, but Hilmes offered the heavy blow with a two-out bases-clearing double to push QU ahead 7-2.

Snyder added a two-run single in the eighth and two more runs in the ninth helped Quincy pull away late.

Senior right-hander Graham Spraker (Tucson, Ariz.) earned the win (5-4), allowing five runs (only two earned) on 10 hits in a QU season-high 8 1/3 innings. He allowed three walks and struck out seven. Junior Cole Crawford (Wilton, Iowa) retired the last two batters.

Miles led the offense, going 4-for-5 with three runs, two RBI and a walk. Walters and DeMuri each had two hits and two RBI.

Quincy and Rockhurst will now try and get in the final two games of the series Saturday and/or Sunday in Kansas City, but the weather may have an impact on those efforts.
