Hawks Rally Late, But Fall In Finale To Rockhurst

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team saw its late rally come up short as Rockhurst won the finale of a three-game series, 10-7, on Sunday (April 30) night in Warrensville, Mo.

The teams started their series on Friday with a doubleheader and finally managed to wait out day-long downpours to get in one more game on Sunday evening on the campus of Central Missouri. Quincy (27-17, 16-7 GLVC) took two of three from Rockhurst (21-23, 9-14 GLVC), but with Drury's four-game sweep of Maryville, QU holds just a half-game lead over the Panthers (16-8 GLVC) in the GLVC West.

Quincy will conclude its regular season with a four-game series against William Jewell Friday and Saturday at QU Stadium. Drury finishes its season on the road against Missouri-St. Louis.

On Sunday, Quincy took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as senior Dominic Miles (Quincy, Ill.) singled to start the game and scored on a triple by junior Troy Wehde (St. Charles, Mo.).

QU starter Mark Niebrugge (Effingham, Ill.) pitched around a leadoff single in the bottom of the first, but Rockhurst tied the game in the second inning. RU tacked on two more in the third to take a 3-1 lead.

Rockhurst ran Niebrugge from the game in the fifth by sending 12 batters to the plate and scoring seven times to push the spread to 10-1.

Quincy went quietly until the eighth when junior Brynn Martinez (Southwest Ranches, Fla.) led off with a triple and scored on Miles' RBI single to left. Two more singles loaded the bases before Wehde delivered a sac fly. Senior Jack Klages (St. Louis, Mo.) followed with an RBI groundout and sophomore Nolan Snyder (St. Louis, Mo.) rapped a two-out RBI single to make it 10-5.

Needing five runs in the ninth, Quincy was able to get the tying run to the plate. Martinez hit a solo homer with one out and a hit-by-pitch and single put two runners on for junior J.C. DeMuri (Manchester, Mo.), who rapped an RBI single. A groundout put two runners in scoring position, but with two down, Klages lined out to first base to end the game.

Niebrugge (6-3) suffered the loss, tossing 4 2/3 innings. Freshman William Sanchez (Miami, Fla.) and junior Cole Crawford (Wilton, Iowa) each tossed an inning of perfect relief. Andrew Ellwanger (5-4) earned the win for Rockhurst with seven strong innings.

Miles, Walters, DeMuri, Wehde, Snyder and Martinez all had two hits apiece with Miles scoring three runs and Martinez contributing a triple and a homer. Rockhurst out-hit Quincy, 15-13.

Quincy will open its series against William Jewell (18-23, 10-12 GLVC) on Friday at noon at QU Stadium.
