Hawks Bounce Back With Monday Sweep Of Saints

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team bounced back from a couple losses on Sunday to earn a doubleheader sweep over Maryville on Monday (April 24) in St. Louis. The Hawks won by scores of 11-5 and 6-5.

Quincy (25-16, 14-6) started the weekend with a two-game lead in the GLVC West standings and the lead held there heading into the final two weekends of conference play. Drury (12-8 GLVC) sits in second place with Missouri S&T (11-9 GLVC) three games back.

The Hawks broke open Game 1 early with six runs in the second inning to take a 6-1 lead. Senior David Hayes (Stanton, Ky.) ripped a bases-loaded single to start the scoring before QU took the lead on a sac fly by junior Brynn Martinez (Southwest Ranches, Fla.). Senior Dominic Miles (Quincy, Ill.) followed with an RBI single before Hayes scored with the help of an error as Miles stole second base. Juniors J.C. DeMuri (Manchester, Mo.) and Troy Wehde (St. Charles, Mo.) capped the inning with RBI hits.

The Saints (22-20, 9-11 GLVC) rallied for two in the second off QU starter Mark Niebrugge (Effingham, Ill.) to cut the margin to 6-3, but the Hawks scored five more runs in the third inning. Junior Matt Hilmes (Carlyle, Ill.) hit a leadoff home run – his fifth of the season – to make it 7-3. Miles then walked, stole second and scored on DeMuri's second straight RBI single. Wehde put the nail in the coffin with a three-run blast, his ninth home run in a 13-game stretch, to make it 11-3.

Niebrugge (6-2) kept the Saints in check for the most part in picking up his third straight win. He gave up five runs (four earned) on eight hits in six innings, striking out four and walking three. Freshman William Sanchez (Miami, Fla.) tossed a scoreless inning of relief. Brian King (0-3) took the loss for the Saints, allowing six runs in 1 1/3 innings.

Wehde went 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBI while Miles was 1-for-2 with three walks, two runs, an RBI and three stolen bases.

The Hawks trailed 3-0 going into the seventh inning of Monday's finale before a two-run single by sophomore T.J. Tamaccio (Boca Raton, Fla.) cut into the deficit and made it 3-2 in the seventh. QU still stranded two runners in scoring position with only one out.

DeMuri started the eighth inning with a single and scored on Wehde's double to the gap that tied the game at 3. The Hawks would eventually load the bases after the Saints intentionally passed Hilmes and Tamaccio came through again with a two-run double down the left field line that put Quincy up 5-3. Martinez followed with an RBI single to stretch the lead to three runs.

Maryville scored a couple runs in the eighth inning to remove any cushion for QU closer Cole Crawford (Wilton, Iowa). The right-hander walked Zack Ruckman with one out, but he got a fly out and a strikeout to end the game and pick up his seventh save.

Senior lefty Hunter Haynes (Mexico, Mo.) tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win and improve to 7-1 on the season. Sophomore left-hander Aaron Stone (Palmyra, Mo.) made just his second start of the season and gave up three runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings without factoring in the decision. He walked one and struck out one. Alec Harris (2-1), who had two saves for Maryville on Sunday, took the loss in Monday's finale.

Tamaccio was the only QU player with multiple hits, going 3-for-4 and finishing a homer short of the cycle. He drove in four of Quincy's six runs. Snyder was 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs.

The Hawks are scheduled to play their final nonconference game of the season Wednesday (April 26) at Illinois Springfield at 3 p.m. The Prairie Stars (26-15) are coming off a four-game sweep of UW-Parkside.
