Hawks Drop Pair To Saints On Sunday

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team held only a brief lead in Game 2 before Maryville regained the advantage as the host Saints swept the Hawks in a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on Sunday (April 23) afternoon in St. Louis. The Hawks lost by scores of 4-2 and 9-7.

The Hawks (23-16, 12-6 GLVC), who maintain a one-game lead over Drury in the GLVC West standings, managed only four singles and stranded 10 runners through the first seven innings of Sunday's opener as the Saints (22-18, 9-9 GLVC) built a 3-0 lead. Quincy left 10 runners on base in the first seven frames.

Quincy finally came through in the eighth, loading the bases for junior Brynn Martinez (Southwest Ranches, Fla.), who slashed a two-run single through the hole on the left side to cut the Hawks' deficit to 3-2. That left two runners on for the top of the order and one out, but Quincy failed to tie the game. The Hawks went 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position.

Connor Markell's RBI single in the eighth gave the Saints an insurance run, but the Hawks went down in order in the ninth to end the game.

Senior Graham Spraker (Tucson, Ariz.) took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits in seven innings. He walked six and struck out five. MU starter AJ Dean earned the win with six shutout innings. He issued seven walks and struck out four. Alec Harris earned the save.

Senior Dominic Miles (Quincy, Ill.) and sophomore T.J. Tamaccio (Boca Raton, Fla.) had two hits each of the Hawks' six in the game.

The Hawks played from behind early in Game 2 as the Saints plated five runs in the first inning as the Hawks gave up just two hits, but issued six walks. Three runs scored on bases-loaded walks before reliever Brandan Moriarty (Westminster, Colo.) induced an inning-ending double play.

Quincy got a run back in the third as Martinez reached on a one-out single and scored on Miles' RBI double.

The Hawks took their only lead of the afternoon with a five-run fourth inning. Junior Troy Wehde (St. Charles, Mo.) led off with a solo homer to right field, his eighth of the season. Senior Jack Klages (St. Louis, Mo.) and sophomore Nolan Snyder (St. Louis, Mo.) followed with hits before junior Matt Hilmes (Carlyle, Ill.) yanked a three-run homer to right that tied the game at 5. Senior David Hayes (Stanton, Ky.) followed with a walk and eventually scored on an RBI single by junior J.C. DeMuri (Manchester, Mo.) to give the Hawks the lead.

The advantage was short-lived as Maryville's Daniel Covert hit a solo homer and Mitch Carriger added a three-run blast in the fourth to give the Saints a 9-6 lead.

The Hawks tacked on a run on two-out Hayes' RBI single in the fifth, but went scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings to end the game.

Freshman reliever Alex Pribyl (Anoka, Minn.) suffered the loss (0-1) for the Hawks while Zach Morrisey (1-1) earned the relief win for the Saints. Harris picked up his second save of the day. Freshman starter Riley Martin (Salem, Ill.) did not factor in the decision, walking four in the first inning.

The Hawks broke through for 13 hits in the nightcap, led by Klages' 3-for-4 performance. Hilmes, Miles and Snyder had two hits apiece.

The Hawks will look for the series split in Monday's (April 24) doubleheader that is set to begin at noon in St. Louis.
