Hawks Split Weekend Series With Miners

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team slugged its way to 11 runs in a Game 1 win, but the Hawks faltered, 4-2, in the second half of a doubleheader against Missouri S&T on Sunday (April 2) afternoon in Rolla.

The Hawks (17-10, 6-2 GLVC) and Miners (12-14, 3-5 GLVC) split their four-game weekend series and Quincy now sits tied with Drury and William Jewell atop the GLVC West Division.

A two-out rally in the first inning gave the Hawks a 2-0 lead as senior Jake Walters (St. Louis, Mo.) and junior J.C. DeMuri (Manchester, Mo.) each singled before junior Troy Wehde (St. Charles, Mo.) tripled both home.

In the second, sophomore Nolan Snyder (St. Louis, Mo.) doubled, went to third on a groundout and scored on an error to push the Hawks' lead to 3-0 with senior lefty Hunter Haynes (Mexico, Mo.) on the hill.

Haynes cruised through the first two innings before giving up singles runs – one unearned – in the third and fourth innings.

The Hawks broke the game open with a four-run fifth inning as DeMuri ripped an RBI single followed by Wehde's two-run single that made it 6-2. Wehde would eventually score on a wild pitch to make it a five-run game.

QU tacked on three more in the sixth with two coming on DeMuri's two-run triple and Wehde delivering the third run on an RBI groundout. Another RBI groundout by senior Dominic Miles (Quincy, Ill.) pushed the advantage to 11-2 before the Miners scored twice in the seventh.

Haynes (4-1) was effective in picking up his fourth win, surrendering two runs – one earned – on just four hits in six innings. He walked three and struck out seven. Luke Marcheschi (2-4) gave up six earned runs and took the loss for S&T.

DeMuri went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, three runs and three RBI while Wehde was 2-for-4 with a triple, five RBI and a run scored. Snyder, Miles and Walters all had two hits apiece as the Hawks out-hit the Miners, 12-5.

The Hawks opened the finale with a run in the top of the first as junior Brynn Martinez (Southwest Ranches, Fla.) drew a leadoff walk, stole second, went to third on a groundout and scored on Walters' sac fly.

The Miners tied the game on an RBI groundout in the second off senior starter Mark Niebrugge (Effingham, Ill.). Missouri S&T took advantage of a QU error by scoring an unearned run in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead.

Wehde's RBI single in the sixth tied the game at 2, but the Hawks left the bases loaded as Matt Lamb got a fly out to end the inning.

Niebrugge retired kept the Miners scoreless in the fifth and sixth, but the hosts scored a run in the seventh on a two-out RBI double by Jack DeGarmo to take a 3-2 lead. S&T made it 4-2 with another unearned run in the eighth.

The Hawks put a couple runners aboard in the ninth, but were not able to scratch out a run off Lamb, who earned the win in relief for the Miners.

Niebrugge (3-2) pitched well, but suffered the loss, allowing three runs – two earned – on just five hits in seven innings. He struck out three and did not walk a batter.

Wehde was the only Hawk with two hits in the nightcap and finished the day with six total RBI. The Miners out-hit Quincy, 6-4.

The Hawks will return to the field on Wednesday (April 5) for a nonconference game at Illinois Springfield at 1 p.m.
