Hawks Walk Off Tritons In Opener of Saturday Split

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team won in walk-off fashion over Missouri-St. Louis, 14-11, in the first game of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on Saturday (April 8) at QU Stadium, but the Tritons came back to get a 4-3 win in the finale.

Senior catcher David Hayes (Stanton, Ky.) hit the first pitch he saw in the ninth inning over the wall in left field for a walk-off three-run homer to cap a wild game that saw the Tritons (10-16, 4-6 GLVC) come all the way back from a 10-1 deficit to tie the game at 11 in the top of the ninth.

Twelve of the Hawks' 14 runs came on four home runs in the game. In the first inning, the Hawks (18-11, 7-3 GLVC) put two runners on for junior Troy Wehde (St. Charles, Mo.), who crushed a 1-1 offering from Brendan Watts off the scoreboard in right-center field to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead.

The Tritons got a run back in the second off freshman lefty starter Riley Martin (Salem, Ill.), but Hayes singled to start the second before junior Matt Hilmes (Carlyle, Ill.) left the yard to right-center field to give the Hawks a 5-1 lead.

The Hawks made it 10-1 in the third as Hayes drove in a run on a groundout. Hilmes would unload the bases later in the inning with a grand slam – his second home run of the game and third of the season – down the right field line. He finished the game with six RBI.

Martin gave up singles in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings, but ran into real trouble in the sixth as a two-run double by Tom DeCero cut the deficit to 10-4.

The Tritons then roughed up the QU bullpen, scoring twice in the seventh, and three times in the eighth before DeCero's two-run homer in the ninth tied the game at 11.

In the bottom of the ninth, Wehde and senior Jack Klages (St. Louis, Mo.) each singled before Hayes' game-winning homer.

Junior Cole Crawford (Wilton, Iowa) picked up the win (1-1) in relief while Alex Oltmann (0-2) took the loss for the Tritons. Martin gave up four runs – three earned – on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings in his start. He struck out three and walked one.

Wehde opened the scoring of Game 2 by leading off the second inning with a solo blast to straightaway center field. It was his second homer of the day and season.

In the third, junior J.C. DeMuri (Manchester, Mo.) had an RBI double to give QU a 2-0 lead.

Senior starter Graham Spraker (Tucson, Ariz.) kept the Tritons quiet, holding them to just four hits over the first five innings.

The game changed in the sixth as UMSL loaded the bases with a walk, hit batter and single for pinch-hitter Cole McDonald, who sent a 2-2 pitch over the wall in left field for a grand slam and a 4-2 lead for the visitors.

The Hawks got a run back in the sixth as Wehde's single and subsequent rundown between first and second allowed DeMuri to score from second and cut the deficit to 4-3.

Jon Shanker retired Quincy in order in the seventh to end the game and earn his first save. Jacob Renfrow (3-2) picked up the win, giving up three runs on three hits with five walks and two strikeouts in six innings. Spraker (3-3) took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out five. Freshman Alex Pribyl (Anoka, Minn.) tossed a scoreless 1 1/3 innings of relief with two strikeouts.

The Hawks and Tritons will complete their four-game series on Sunday (April 9) at noon with a doubleheader at QU Stadium.
