Hawks Stopped By Flyers in Nonconference Action

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team saw the momentum it built with a weekend series win over nationally-ranked Drury halted on Tuesday (April 18) with a couple nonconference road defeats at Lewis, 16-5 and 8-7.

The Hawks (23-14) served up seven defensive miscues on the day and the pitching staff was not able to keep Flyers (10-27) at bay.

Quincy trailed 8-0 in the opener before finally getting on the board in the fifth inning on a three-run homer by senior Dominic Miles (Quincy, Ill.), who now has five home runs this season. Senior David Hayes (Stanton, Ky.) and sophomore Nolan Snyder (St. Louis, Mo.), who each singled, scored on the homer.

The Flyers got two runs back in the bottom of the inning to make it 10-3. In the top of the sixth, senior Jack Klages (St. Louis, Mo.) hit a two-run blast that scored junior J.C. DeMuri (Manchester, Mo.) to cut the deficit to 10-5, but the Flyers scored six in the bottom half to blow the game back open.

Starter Nick Stroud (Dalton City, Ill.) took the loss (0-2), giving up six runs (four earned) in one-plus inning pitched. All four relievers gave up multiple runs in their outings. Jake Herron (1-2) tossed three shutout innings to earn the win for the Flyers.

Klages was the only QU player with two hits, going 2-for-3 with a homer.

Game 2 was a back-and-forth game that Quincy led 7-6 going into the bottom of the seventh, but a two-out, two-run walkoff homer by Trevor Johnson gave the Flyers the win.

Lewis led 1-0 after two innings, but Miles tied it in the third with a sac fly. Lewis took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the third on a three-run homer by Kenny King.

The Hawks struck back in the fourth as junior Troy Wehde (St. Charles, Mo.) hit a two-run blast and Snyder delivered an RBI single to tie the game at 4. Wehde now has seven home runs on the season, all coming in the last 10 games.

Quincy took advantage of two errors in the fifth inning as Miles singled and eventually scored on an error to give the Hawks a 5-4 lead.

Sam Cybulski gave the lead back to the Flyers in the sixth with a two-run homer to make it 6-5.

In the top of the seventh, senior Jake Walters (St. Louis, Mo.) came up with Miles on base and hit his 16th homer of the season to give the Hawks a 7-6 advantage. That lead was swallowed up by Johnson's two-run game winner.

Junior Cole Crawford (Wilton, Iowa) took the loss (1-2) for the Hawks while Nick Davito (1-2) earned the relief win for Lewis.

Snyder was the only QU player with two hits as the Flyers out-hit the Hawks, 10-6, in the finale.

The Hawks will return to the field on Saturday (April 22) to open a four-game series at Maryville as part of a 10-game road trip. First pitch is set for noon.
