Statement Series: Hawks Take Three Of Four From Drury

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team got a dose of solid pitching and hit five home runs on its way to a doubleheader sweep of Drury by scores of 10-6 and 5-3 on Saturday (April 15) afternoon at QU Stadium.

The Hawks (23-12, 12-4 GLVC) won three of four games from the Panthers (24-12, 10-6 GLVC) on the weekend to take a two-game lead in the GLVC West standings.

Quincy trailed 1-0 after the top of the first in the opener, but scored the next eight runs and never trailed against on Saturday.

The Hawks rallied for four runs on four hits in the first inning, getting RBI singles from junior Troy Wehde (St. Charles, Mo.), sophomore Nolan Snyder (St. Louis, Mo.) and senior David Hayes (Stanton, Ky.) as the Hawks sent nine batters to the plate.

In the second, senior Jake Walters (St. Louis, Mo.) blasted a solo shot – his 15th homer of the season to make it 5-1. Two batters later, Wehde had an RBI double before senior Jack Klages (St. Louis, Mo.) lofted a fly ball that cleared the right-field fence to stretch the lead to 8-1.

Nic Perkins touched up QU starter Hunter Haynes (Mexico, Mo.) for a two-run homer in the third, but an RBI double by senior Dominic Miles (Quincy, Ill.) in the bottom of the inning made it 9-3.

Haynes settled in during the next two innings, allowing just a leadoff single in the fifth. Perkins hit a leadoff homer in the sixth, but Haynes stopped the rally there.

Wehde gave the Hawks an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer to straightaway center field.

The QU bullpen ran into trouble in the seventh as the Hawks walked four batters with two coming around to score. Finally, junior closer Cole Crawford (Wilton, Iowa) needed to make one pitch to get Dylan Bradshaw to ground out to second to leave the bags loaded to end the game.

Haynes (6-1) earned the win, allowing four runs on seven hits with one walk and eight strikeouts. Crawford earned his seventh save. Avery Jennings (1-2) was tagged for seven runs in 1 1/3 innings and took the loss.

Wehde went 3-for-4 with a homer, a double, three runs and three RBI. Hayes and junior J.C. DeMuri (Manchester, Mo.) had two hits apiece.

The Hawks relied heavily on starter Mark Niebrugge (Effingham, Ill.) in the nightcap. He gave up just three hits through the first five innings as Quincy took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the inning. QU's first run came on a sac fly by Snyder in the second.

Quincy added some cushion in the fifth as junior Brynn Martinez (Southwest Ranches, Fla.) blasted a two-run homer to right field. The next hitter, Klages, slugged his second home run of the day to make it 4-0.

The Panthers scored a couple unearned runs in the sixth with the help of two Quincy errors. The Hawks committed an uncharacteristic 10 errors on the weekend.

QU got one back in the sixth as Wehde drew a one-out walk and scored from first on Snyder's double off the wall in center to make it 5-2.

The Panthers got a run in the seventh on Ethan Owens' RBI single. With runners at first and second and no outs, Ryan Colombo hit a smash up the middle and Miles fired a bullet to third base where Klages tagged out the runner before the runner from second crossed the plate to keep it a 5-3 game.

Niebrugge worked around a one-out double in the eighth before hitting Justin Abernathy to start the ninth. The Hawks then called on Crawford, who walked Owens before a sac bunt moved the runners to second and third. Left-hander Tommy Hager (O'Fallon, Mo.) came on to face left-handed hitting Clayton Enger and got him to foul out to Hayes behind the plate. The next batter, Perkins, then hit a shot to center field, but Miles came in a couple steps to snag the liner and seal the sweep.

Niebrugge (5-2) picked up the win, allowing three runs (one earned) on nine hits in eight-plus innings. He struck out three and walked two. Hager earned his first save. Austin Simms (4-3) suffered the defeat for the Panthers, giving up five runs (four earned) in six innings.

Snyder and Martinez had two hits apiece to lead the QU offense.

The Hawks will return to the field on Tuesday (April 18) for a nonconference doubleheader at Lewis. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. The twinbill will open a 10-game road trip for Quincy.
