Hawks, Panthers Play To Saturday Stalemate, Remain Tied

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team remains tied with Drury atop the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division standings as the teams split the first day of a four-game series at QU Stadium on Friday (April 14) afternoon. The Hawks won Game 1, 6-5, while the Panthers took Game 2, 9-4.

The Hawks (21-12, 10-4 GLVC) got an excellent start from senior Graham Spraker (Tucson, Ariz.). After giving up consecutive singles to start the game, he came back to strike out the next three to keep the Panthers (24-10, 10-4 GLVC) off the board. Spraker then struck out a pair in the second and retired Drury on just five pitches in the third inning.

Quincy took the lead in the bottom of the third as senior Brynn Martinez (Southwest Ranches, Fla.) ripped a one-out single and senior Dominic Miles (Quincy, Ill.) followed with an opposite-field two-run homer, his fourth of the year.

The Panthers got on the board with an unearned run in the sixth on an RBI single by Ryan Colombo. The Hawks committed four errors in the game, leading to two unearned runs.

Quincy took a 5-1 lead in the sixth. Miles drew a leadoff walk and senior Jake Walters (St. Louis, Mo.) blasted a 1-2 pitch over the wall in right-center for a two-run homer – his 14th of the season. Two batters later, junior Troy Wehde (St. Charles, Mo.) hit a solo home run.

Drury scored a run in the seventh before running Spraker from the game in the eighth inning. With one run already in, one out and two on, QU head coach Josh Rabe turned to freshman reliever Alex Pribyl (Anoka, Minn.). The right-hander struck out the next two batters to keep the score at 5-3.

An RBI single by junior Matt Hilmes (Carlyle, Ill.) in the eighth gave the Hawks an insurance run that would wind up coming in handy.

The Panthers rallied for three straight hits to start the ninth inning off junior closer Cole Crawford (Wilton, Iowa), cutting the lead to 6-5. Crawford then buckled down and got a strikeout, pop out and fly out against the Panthers' 2-3-4 hitters to nail down his sixth save.

Spraker (4-3) gave up three runs (one earned) on 10 hits without walking a batter in 7 1/3 innings. He struck out eight. Ryan Colombo (7-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing five runs on five hits with nine strikeouts and three walks in seven innings.

Hilmes was the only QU player with two hits, going 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Miles also reached three times, going 1-for-2 with a homer, two walks, two runs and two RBI.

The Panthers opened the scoring in the first inning of the finale with an unearned run off freshman lefty Riley Martin (Salem, Ill.).

Quincy answered right back as Walters reached on a single and Wehde smashed a 1-2 pitch out to right field to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead. It was Wehde's second homer on the day and his fifth of the season.

The Panthers tied the game in the second inning on an RBI groundout by Caleb Essick. Clayton Engel's two-run double with Martin just a strike from ending the fourth inning gave the Panthers a 4-2 lead. They tacked on three more in the fifth to make it 7-2.

Quincy had a chance to come back in the fifth, starting the inning with three straight singles, the last an RBI rip by Martinez. Miles then hit a sharp liner to second and Colombo stepped on the bag to double off the runner. A groundout ended the inning with QU down 7-3.

The Hawks trailed 9-3 going into the seventh, but they managed only an RBI single by Martinez before a strikeout and a pop-out ended the game.

Martin (4-3) took the loss, giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Garrett Woods (5-2) surrendered four runs on eight hits in a complete game effort. He struck out seven and walked one.

Martinez went 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead the Hawks' offense while Wehde was 1-for-2 with a homer, two RBI and a walk.

The Hawks and Panthers will finish their four-game set on Saturday (April 15) at noon at QU Stadium.
