Hawks Bounce Back With Win In Five-Set Thriller

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team rebounded from a five-set defeat on Friday night by pulling out a five-set thriller on Saturday (April 1), knocking off Fort Wayne, 21-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-20, 15-11, at Arnie Ball Court in Fort Wayne, Ind.

The Hawks (7-19, 2-12 MIVA) used a terrific defensive effort on the back row that allowed them to funnel their offense through the middle. Quincy hit .314 as a result and senior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) racked up a career-high 20 kills and hit .630 for the match.

After dropping the opening set, the Hawks opened the second set on a 16-9 run before the Mastodons (5-21, 2-12 MIVA) came back to get within 18-17. The Hawks never let their lead slip under two after that point, picking up the win.

In the third set, the Hawks could not keep up with Fort Wayne, which hit .393 while holding QU to a .200 mark.

Quincy bounced back in the fourth set, building a 15-9 lead with a run capped by back-to-back blocks by Kelso. Junior Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) joined him on the first of those.

With QU leading 18-14, the teams exchanged sideouts the rest of the way with an attacking error by the hosts giving the Hawks the 25-20 win and forcing a fifth set.

The fifth was even at 4-4 before Quincy scored seven straight points with Fanfulik on the serve to give the Hawks an 11-4 lead. The Mastodons pulled to within three, 14-11, but the sixth kill of the set by sophomore David Siebum (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) ended the match.

Siebum was the only other QU player besides Kelso in double figures with 10 kills (.222). Freshman Omari Wheeler (North Las Vegas, Nev./Legacy) had eight kills (.167).

The Hawks totaled 14 blocks in the match, led by Kelso and freshman Blake Sprecher (Cross Plains, Wis./Middleton), who had five each. Sophomore Kolbie Knorr (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) led the back row with 11 digs. Fanfulik dished out 44 assists to go with six digs and three blocks.

Alex Dickmann paced Fort Wayne with 24 kills (.372) while Nick Smalter added 10 digs.

The Hawks will return to Pepsi Arena on Thursday (April 6) for a 7 p.m. match against McKendree.
