Kelso Hits 1,000th Career Kill Against McKendree

QUINCY, Ill. – Senior middle blocker Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) became the eighth player in Quincy University men's volleyball to record 1,000 career kills, but the Hawks fell to McKendree, 25-22, 23-25, 25-21, 25-22, in MIVA action Thursday (April 6) night at Pepsi Arena.

Kelso sat at 999 kills heading into the match and his first kill Thursday came on an overpass as he pounded a right-handed spike through the McKendree defense to cut QU's deficit to 4-3 in the first set.

The Hawks (7-20, 2-13 MIVA) trailed Set 1, 22-19, before rallying for three straight points to tie it up at 22. The Bearcats (10-18, 5-10 MIVA) responded by scoring the last three points in the set.

The second set was close the entire way through with neither team gaining more than a three-point lead. Both teams had sideout percentages of at least 75 percent. With the set tied at 23, the Bearcats hit their next serve into the net before an attack error gave the Hawks the win.

The Hawks never led in the third set, but tied up the fourth frame at 18 on a kill by junior Anthony Winter (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/St. Edward). McKendree then went on a 5-2 run to take a 23-20 lead. The Hawks scored the next two points, one on a block by Kelso, but the Bearcats closed with a kill and a block to end the match.

Kelso, Winter and freshman Omari Wheeler (North Las Vegas, Nev./Legacy) had nine kills apiece to lead the Hawks' offense which hit .180 on the night. Kelso also tallied eight blocks as the Hawks registered double digits (15 blocks) in that category for the third straight match.

Sophomore Kolbie Knorr (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrensville South) led the back row with eight digs while junior Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) had 27 assists.

The Hawks will close the regular season on Saturday (April 8) at 7 p.m. with Senior Day at Pepsi Arena against No. 2 Ohio State. The match is a crucial one for the Hawks, who trail Fort Wayne on tiebreakers for the final spot in the MIVA Tournament.
