Hawk Bats Awaken To Earn Split at S&T

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team rallied for a 12-4 win in Saturday's (April 1) nightcap to earn a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader split at Missouri S&T in Rolla. The Miners took Game 1, 7-2.

Junior J.C. DeMuri (Manchester, Mo.) hit for the cycle over the course of both games and drove in five runs on Saturday. The outfielder now has 19 RBI in his last five games.

The Hawks (16-9, 5-1 GLVC) took an early lead in Game 2 with a two-out rally in the first inning. Senior Jake Walters (St. Louis, Mo.) singled and DeMuri followed with an RBI triple to right field to give Quincy a 1-0 lead.

The Miners (11-13, 2-4 GLVC) responded with three runs in the bottom of the first off QU starter Graham Spraker (Tuscon, Ariz.). S&T made it 4-1 with a run in the bottom of the second.

Quincy took the lead for good with four runs in the top of the third. Senior Jack Klages (St. Louis, Mo.) led off with a home run that stayed fair down the right field line. Junior Brynn Martinez (Southwest Ranches, Fla.) was then hit by a pitch and senior Dominic Miles (Quincy, Ill.) followed with a single. Two batters later, DeMuri powered the first pitch he saw for a three-run homer to left-center that gave Quincy a 5-4 lead.

Spraker settled in after his rough start, giving up just four hits over the final five innings. He pitched around a walk and a single in the third and escaped trouble with the help of a pick-off in the fourth after the Miners started the inning with two straight hits.

The Hawks put the game out of reach with six runs in the fifth inning. Junior Troy Wehde (St. Charles, Mo.) drove in a run when he reached on an error and sophomore Chandler Purcell (Waterloo, Ill.) followed with a bases-loaded walk. DeMuri, who also reached on a walk, scored on a wild pitch before freshman Michael Nielsen (Bloomingdale, Ill.) lifted a 3-2 offering over the wall in right for a three-run homer to cap the scoring.

Spraker (3-2) earned the win, giving up four runs on nine hits in seven innings. He walked two and struck out four. Anthony Garza (1-1) took the loss for S&T.

DeMuri was 2-for-3 with a triple, a homer, a walk, two runs and four RBI. Nielsen, Miles and Walters also had two hits apiece.

DeMuri's RBI double in the first and an RBI single by sophomore T.J. Tamaccio (Boca Raton, Fla.) in the second gave Quincy a 2-0 lead in Saturday's opener.

The Hawks would then give up runs in each of the next four innings as the Miners built a 7-2 lead that was not threatened as Trent Green and two relievers were in control.

Freshman lefty Riley Martin (Salem, Ill.) took the loss (4-2), allowing six runs on six hits in four innings. He walked three and struck out three. Green (2-3) earned the victory for Missouri S&T, tossing seven strong innings.

DeMuri and Tamaccio were the only Hawks with two hits in the game while Martinez drew Quincy's only two walks.

The Hawks and Miners will continue their four-game set on Sunday (April 2) in Rolla. First pitch is set for noon.
