Martin Takes No-Hitter Into Seventh In 9-5 Win

QUINCY, Ill. – The 25th-ranked Quincy University baseball team scored six early runs and freshman left-hander Riley Martin (Salem, Ill.) took a no-hitter into the seventh as the Hawks knocked off 15th-ranked Indianapolis, 9-5, on Thursday (March 9) afternoon at QU Stadium.

The Hawks (7-5) got on the board in the first inning as junior Brynn Martinez (Southwest Ranches, Fla.) doubled in his first at-bat since an injury in the first game of the season and scored on an RBI single to center by senior Dominic Miles (Quincy, Ill.). Miles went to third on an error and scored on a sac fly by senior Jake Walters (St. Louis, Mo.). Sophomore Chandler Purcell (Waterloo, Ill.) later added an RBI fielder's choice that scored junior J.C. DeMuri (Manchester, Mo.) to make it 3-0.

Freshman Michael Nielsen (Bloomingdale, Ill.) and Martinez started the second with singles and both moved up on a passed ball. Miles and Walters then brought runs on RBI groundouts before senior Jack Klages (St. Louis, Mo.) delivered a two-out RBI single to run UIndy starter Jake Shaw from the game.

Meanwhile, Martin used the early lead and cruised. He pitched around single baserunners in the first through fourth innings before Quincy tacked on a single run in the fifth on Nielsen's RBI single. QU made it 9-0 in the sixth as Purcell had an RBI hit and sophomore T.J. Tamaccio (Boca Raton, Fla.) drew a bases-loaded walk.

Martin at one point set down eight in a row, beginning with a groundout to end the fourth until walking back-to-back hitters with one out in the seventh. The next batter, Blake Richardson, broke up the no-hitter to load the bases.

The Greyhounds wound up scoring five runs in the seventh inning as Brendan Dudas and Demetrius Webb tagged Martin for run-scoring singles. Sophomore Karl Hirsch (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) gave up a two-run single, but got Conor White to fly out to escape the jam.

Junior Cole Crawford (Wilton, Iowa) and freshman William Sanchez (Miami, Fla.) each tossed a hitless inning of relief to seal the win.

Five Hawks had two hits in the game with Purcell driving in two runs.

Martin (3-1) earned the win, allowing five runs on three hits in 6 1/3 innings. He walked four and struck out three. Shaw (3-1) took the loss, giving up six runs in 1 2/3 innings.

The Hawks and Greyhounds will return to the field on Friday (March 10) for a doubleheader at QU Stadium. Game 1 will be a nine-inning game and Game 2 will go seven innings.
