Hawks Win Series Over UIndy With Saturday Split

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team bounced back from a 9-4 defeat in Game 1 to rout Indianapolis 12-3 in the nightcap on a frigid Friday (March 10) afternoon at QU Stadium. The Hawks took two of three from the Greyhounds in a series between two teams who figure to be in contention for Midwest regional seeds come early May.

Seven Hawks drove in runs in the second game as the Hawks took advantage of 12 walks issued by the Greyounds (10-4).

Senior Dominic Miles (Quincy, Ill.) and junior J.C. DeMuri (Manchester, Mo.) each drove in runs in the first inning to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead. Junior Brynn Martinez (Southwest Ranches, Fla.) made it 4-0 in the second with a two-run homer in the second inning.

With one out in the third, sophomore Nolan Snyder (St. Louis, Mo.) unloaded the bags by lifting a 3-1 pitch over the wall in right field to stretch the lead to 8-0.

The offense piled up three more runs in the fourth with bases loaded walks coming from senior Jack Klages (St. Louis, Mo.) and freshman Michael Nielsen (Bloomingdale, Ill.) before junior Jack Gainer (Chicago, Ill.) reached on an error to drive in another run.

On the mound, senior Mark Niebrugge (Effingham, Ill.) was solid, allowing just one earned run in a complete game. Niebrugge (2-1) picked up the win, giving up just four hits and two walks while striking out five.

Reid Warner (2-1) took the loss, allowing six runs on five hits and two walks in 2 1/3 innings. All six UIndy pitchers issued at least one walk.

Snyder and DeMuri had two hits apiece to lead the Hawks' offense.

The Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the second inning of Game 1 on RBI hits by Klages and Snyder, but the Greyhounds scored five times in the top of the third to take the lead for good.

Senior Jake Walters (St. Louis, Mo.) hit a solo shot – his ninth homer of the season – in the third inning.

The Hawks only trailed by a run, 5-4, going into the seventh, but the Greyhounds posted two runs in the seventh and ninth innings to pull away.

Jake Sprinkle (1-0) earned his first win of the season with two scoreless innings of relief for the Greyhounds. Senior Hunter Haynes (Mexico, Mo.) suffered his first defeat, giving up five rusn on seven hits in five innings. He walked five and struck out three. DeMuri and Snyder had two hits apiece.
