Hawks Falter In Series Opener Against USI

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team opened a three-game series against Southern Indiana on Friday (March 17), falling to the reigning Midwest Region champion, 6-2, at QU Stadium.

The Hawks (9-7) got a solid start from freshman left-hander Riley Martin (Salem, Ill.), who tossed 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with four walks and five strikeouts. He did not factor into the decision.

Quincy, though, could not get much going offensively, scoring just two runs on eight hits against Colin Nowak, who threw a 131-pitch complete game. He struck out seven and walked two.

The Screaming Eagles (5-8) opened the scoring in the second inning on a sacrifice fly before Martin stranded two runners by getting an inning-ending strikeout. The Eagles left 12 men on base in the game.

The Hawks took a 2-1 lead in the third inning as junior Brynn Martinez (Southwest Ranches, Fla.) and senior Dominic Miles (Quincy, Ill.) each singled with one out. Senior Jake Walters (St. Louis, Mo.) followed with a double off the top of the wall to the deepest part of the park in center field to score Martinez and send Miles to third. Junior J.C. DeMuri (Manchester, Mo.) followed with a go-ahead RBI single to score Miles, but Walters was thrown out at the plate on the play.

Martin kept USI off the board in the fourth and fifth innings, but the Screaming Eagles tied the game in the sixth on an RBI single by Angel Torres off reliever Tommy Hager (O'Fallon, Mo.). Hager was making his first appearance on the mound since a stellar 2015 campaign after missing all of last season with an injury.

Nick Gobert gave Southern Indiana a 4-2 lead in the seventh on a two-run triple that hit just inside the left-field line. USI added two more in the eight to make it 6-2.

The Hawks managed just three hits over the final six innings as Nowak (2-2) was in command. Hager (0-1) was saddled with the loss. Senior Dalton Doerfler tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning to lower his season ERA to 1.35 over 6 2/3 innings.

Sophomore Chandler Purcell (Waterloo, Ill.) led the offense, going 3-for-4 while Walters was 2-for-3 with two doubles.

The Hawks and Screaming Eagles will resume their series on Saturday (March 18) at noon at QU Stadium.
