USI Scores Late To Top Hawks, 5-4

QUINCY, Ill. – Southern Indiana scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning to beat the Quincy University baseball team for the second straight day, 5-4, on Saturday (March 18) afternoon at QU Stadium.

After setting down the Screaming Eagles (6-8) on just seven pitches in the first inning, senior starter Mark Niebrugge (Effingham, Ill.) gave up a couple doubles in the second to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. A two-run single by Sam Griggs extended USI's lead to 3-0 in the third.

USI starter Kyle Griffin retired the first nine Hawks he faced until junior Brynn Martinez (Southwest Ranches, Fla.) started the fourth with a single to center. Two batters later, senior Jake Walters (St. Louis, Mo.) lifted a 3-2 pitch over the wall in left to cut USI's lead to 3-2. Walters now has 10 home runs on the season and entered the weekend ranked second in the country in home runs per game.

The Hawks continued their rally as junior J.C. DeMuri (Manchester, Mo.) struck out, but reached on a wild pitch. He stole second and scored on an RBI single by senior Jack Klages (St. Louis, Mo.) to tie the game at 3-3.

The Screaming Eagles regained the lead with a run in the fifth before the Hawks stranded a pair in the bottom half.

With two down in the seventh, senior David Hayes (Stanton, Ky.) sent the first pitch he saw over the wall in right for an opposite-field homer – his fourth of the season – to tie the game at 4-4.

In the eighth, USI's Drake McNamara singled, went to second on a sac bunt, scooted to third on a wild pitch and scored on a flare to right by Angel Torres to put the Eagles ahead, 5-4.

Tyler Hagedorn and Justin Watts each tossed a perfect inning of relief to close the game for Southern Indiana.

Griffin (1-3) earned the win, giving up four runs on six hits while walking two and striking out nine. Niebrugge did not figure in the decision, tossing 4 1/3 innings and giving up four runs on seven hits. Senior Graham Spraker (Tucson, Ariz.) took the loss (1-2), surrendering one run in 3 2/3 innings. Junior Cole Crawford (Wilton, Iowa) threw a scoreless ninth inning.

Hayes led the Hawks with two hits while Walters and Martinez each reached base twice.

The Hawks and Screaming Eagles will finish their weekend series on Sunday (March 19) at noon at QU Stadium.
