Hawks Salvage Series Finale Against Screaming Eagles

?QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team got a strong start from senior left-hander Hunter Haynes (Mexico, Mo.) and scored twice in its last at-bat to earn a 4-2 win over Southern Indiana on Sunday (March 19) afternoon at QU Stadium.

The Hawks (10-8) salvaged the final game of the three-game set with the Screaming Eagles (6-9), who won the first two in the series.

Tied at 2 in the eighth, the Hawks rallied with four straight one-out singles, the last two coming off the bats of junior Troy Wehde (St. Charles, Mo.) and senior David Hayes (Stanton, Ky.) to drive in the go-ahead and insurance runs.

Haynes was excellent for the Hawks, scattering seven hits over his seven innings of work while striking out nine.

USI opened the scoring in the third on an RBI bunt single by Nathan Kuester.

The Hawks recorded their first hit as senior Jake Walters (St. Louis, Mo.) led off the fourth inning with a moonshot home run to left field – his 11th of the season – to tie the game at 1.

After a leadoff single by the Eagles in the fourth, Haynes set down eight in a row, giving the Hawks a chance to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Brynn Martinez (Southwest Ranches, Fla.) led off the inning with a single before senior Jack Klages (St. Louis, Mo.) doubled him home with a gapper to left-center.

The Hawks eventually loaded the bases with no outs, but reliever Mike Ringer induced a 3-2-3 double play and a groundout to escape the jam.

The Screaming Eagles tied the game in the seventh on Buddy Johnson's RBI double that just went inside the left field line.

Sophomore Karl Hirsch (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) worked a scoreless eighth inning before head coach Josh Rabe called on junior Cole Crawford (Wilton, Iowa) for the ninth. Crawford struck out the first two batters he faced, then walked a pair before striking out Joe Redburn to end the game.

Hirsch (1-0) earned the win and Crawford picked up his third save of the season. Austin Krizan (1-1) took the loss for USI. Starter Lucas Barnett gave up two runs on four hits in five innings.

Wehde, Walters and Klages had two hits apiece with Walters reaching in all four of his plate appearances.

The Hawks will play Game 12 of their 16-game homestand on Tuesday (March 21) when they welcome Illinois Springfield for a single, nine-inning game. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
