Martinez Homers Twice, Drives In All Five in Win

QUINCY, Ill. – Junior shortstop Brynn Martinez (Southwest Ranches, Fla.) hit two home runs and drove in all five runs for the Quincy University baseball team, which held off Illinois Springfield, 5-4, in nonconference action on Tuesday (March 21) afternoon at QU Stadium.

Six Quincy pitchers combined on a three-hitter, led by junior starter Nick Stroud (Dalton City, Ill.), who gave the Hawks (11-8) four solid innings, giving up one run on two hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

The game was scoreless going into the fourth inning when Trey Hannam drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on an RBI hit by Michael Rothmund to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Stroud finished the inning by inducing a groundout and two strikeouts.

He turned it over to senior lefty Tommy Hager (O'Fallon, Mo.), who retired the side in order in the fifth.

In the bottom half, sophomore TJ Tamaccio (Boca Raton, Fla.) reached on an error before Martinez turned on an 0-2 pitch from Sam Geraci and sent it over the wall in right for a two-run shot.

Leading 2-1, Hager again set down UIS in order in the sixth before freshman William Sanchez (Miami, Fla.) tossed a scoreless seventh.

Sophomore Chandler Purcell (Waterloo, Ill.) singled and junior Jack Gainer (Chicago, Ill.) walked in the seventh before Martinez got into a 2-1 pitch, again blasting the ball to right field for a three-run homer and pushing the Hawks' lead to 5-1. Martinez now has three homers on the season.

Command issues caught up to the QU pitching staff in the eighth as two of the three walks in the inning came around to score – one on a sac fly and another on Rothmund's two-run homer – to cut the lead to 5-4. Freshman Alex Pribyl (Anoka, Minn.) got out of trouble by getting Myles Hann to fly out.

Junior Cole Crawford (Wilton, Iowa) retired the first two batters in the ninth, but a throwing error by Martinez put a runner at second with two down. Crawford got Chris Mathieu to line out harmlessly to senior Jake Walters (St. Louis, Mo.) at second base.

Hager (1-1) earned the win with his two perfect innings of relief. Geraci (0-3) took the loss for the Prairie Stars. Crawford earned his fourth save of the season.

Martinez was 2-for-4 with two homers and five RBI. Purcell went 2-for-3 with a walk and junior Troy Wehde (St. Charles, Mo.) added two hits.

The Hawks will open Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Saturday (March 25) at noon against Truman State. The four-game series will conclude Quincy's 16-game homestand.
