Hawks Out-Duel Bulldogs in GLVC Opener

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team got outstanding pitching performances and just enough hitting to claim a 2-1 win over Truman State to open Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Friday (March 24) night at QU Stadium.

The Bulldogs (7-15, 0-1 GLVC) scored a run on two hits in the first inning, but the combination of freshmen lefties Riley Martin (Salem, Ill.) and Brandan Moriarty (Westminster, Colo.) and junior closer Cole Crawford (Wilton, Iowa) gave up just four hits over the final eight innings.

Martin was in total command after giving up the early run, retiring 13 straight Bulldogs until Mason King drew a leadoff walk in the sixth. King was immediately eliminated by senior catcher David Hayes (Stanton, Ky.) trying to steal.

The Hawks (12-8, 1-0 GLVC) tied the game at 1 in the fourth inning when senior Jake Walters (St. Louis, Mo.) doubled off the wall in left and scored on a two-out single by Hayes.

Junior shortstop Brynn Martinez (Southwest Ranches, Fla.) gave the Hawks 2-1 lead in the seventh as he hit a towering solo blast to right field with two outs. He has four homers on the season and three in his last two games.

Martin finally ran into trouble in the eighth inning as a single, an error and a hit by pitch loaded the bases with no outs.

Head coach Josh Rabe called on another freshman, Moriarty, to try and pitch out of the jam. The southpaw got Brendan Trimble to pop out, struck out Dave Gambino on three pitches and got cleanup man Chris Iliopouos to pop out to end the threat.

Crawford gave up a one-out single in the ninth, but he struck out Trevor Bell and then Hayes caught Nick Agliolo trying to steal second to end the game.

Martin (4-1) earned his team-leading fourth win of the season, giving up one run on five hits in seven-plus innings. He walked one and struck out eight. Moriarty got three outs in the eighth and Crawford earned his fifth save.

Truman reliever Kent Frantz (1-4) was charged with the loss, allowing a run in 3 2/3 innings.

Martinez was the only QU player with two hits in the game to extend his hitting streak to nine. He was 2-for-3 with a walk and a homer.

The Hawks and Bulldogs will play another single, nine-inning game on Saturday (March 25) at noon before finishing the series with a twinbill on Sunday at QU Stadium.
