Big Third Inning Sends Hawks Past Bulldogs

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team scored 10 runs in the third inning on its way to a 14-1 rout of Truman State in the second game of a four-game series on Saturday (March 25) at QU Stadium.

The Hawks (13-8, 2-0 GLVC) got a standout pitching performance from senior Graham Spraker (Tucson, Ariz.), who held the Bulldogs (7-16, 0-2 GLVC) in check.

Spraker made just one mistake that Jason Priest sent for a solo homer in the second. Other than that, the right-hander scattered seven hits over seven innings, walking one and striking out six. He needed just 86 pitches.

The Hawks tied the game in the bottom of the second when, with runners at first and second with two outs, freshman Michael Nielsen (Bloomingdale, Ill.) hit a grounder to first base that was mishandled, allowing senior Jack Klages (St. Louis, Mo.) to score from second.

Quincy broke the game open in the third by scoring 10 runs on eight hits and two errors. Klages had a sac fly before sophomore Chandler Purcell (Waterloo, Ill.) ripped an RBI single. Nielsen had an RBI hit by pitch and senior Chris Ward (Carmel, Ind.) ripped a bases-clearing double. Junior Brynn Martinez (Southwest Ranches, Fla.) added a sac fly to empty the bases.

Senior Dominic Miles (Quincy, Ill.) followed with a triple off the wall in left before senior Jake Walters (St. Louis, Mo.) crushed an 0-1 pitch over the wall in left for a two-run homer – his 12th of the season – to make it 11-1.

Junior J.C. DeMuri (Manchester, Mo.) had the finishing blow in the fifth, hitting a monster opposite-field three-run homer to put the Hawks up 14-1. He now has four homers this season.

Junior Nate Perez (Galesburg, Ill.) and senior Brock Best (Carthage, Ill.) each tossed a scoreless inning of relief.

Spraker (2-2) even his record with the win while lowering his season ERA to 2.29. Rian Markes (1-2) was saddled with the loss, giving up nine runs (five earned) in 2 2/3 innings.

Purcell went 3-for-3 with a walk, a run and an RBI while Walters was 1-for-2 with a homer, three walks, three runs and two RBI. Miles went 3-for-5 and scored three runs. The Hawks out-hit the Bulldogs, 14-9.

The Hawks will conclude their program-record 16-game homestand on Sunday (March 26) with a doubleheader against the Bulldogs slated for noon. Game 1 will be seven innings, followed by a nine-inning game.
