DeMuri Drives In 11 As Hawks Finish Sweep of Truman

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team slugged its way to a four-game series sweep with a couple of wins over Truman State, 6-2 and 17-7, on Sunday (March 26) at QU Stadium.

Junior J.C. DeMuri (Manchester, Mo.) hit three home runs and a triple and drove in 11 runs on the day. He hit a three-run homer in Game 1 and a grand slam and two-run home run in Game 2.

The Hawks (15-8, 4-0 GLVC) banged out 31 hits on the day, batting .425 with six doubles, a triple and five home runs.

Truman opened the Game 1 scoring with a run in the first inning off senior left-hander Hunter Haynes (Mexico, Mo.), who tossed six-plus innings and gave up two runs and eight hits. He struck out four.

DeMuri's RBI single in the bottom of the first tied the game at 1, and his three-run bomb in the third inning gave QU a 4-1 lead.

The Bulldogs (7-18, 0-4 GLVC) got a run back in the fourth, but RBI singles by sophomore T.J. Tamaccio (Boca Raton, Fla.) and senior Dominic Miles (Quincy, Ill.) capped the scoring in the fifth.

Haynes gave up a couple hits to start the seventh, but freshman Brandan Moriarty (Westminster, Colo.) induced a double play and then struck out Nick Agliolo to end the game. Haynes (3-1) earned the win, making 106 pitches in his six-plus innings of work. Moriarty earned his first career save.

Tamaccio and Miles each had three hits, including a double, and an RBI in the game while DeMuri went 2-for-3 with a homer, a walk and four RBI.

Jason Priest's three-run homer gave the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead in the first inning of Game 2, but the Hawks got single runs in the first and second innings with RBIs coming from seniors Jake Walters (St. Louis, Mo.) and Chris Ward (Carmel, Ind.).

DeMuri's RBI triple in the fourth tied the game and junior Troy Wehde (St. Charles, Mo.) followed with an RBI single to give the Hawks a 4-3 lead. The next hitter, sophomore Chandler Purcell (Waterloo, Ill.) sent the first pitch he saw over the wall in right for a two-run homer to stretch the Hawks' lead to 6-3.

Miles had an RBI single in the fifth to make it 7-3 before Quincy blew it open with an eight-run sixth inning. Tamaccio yanked an RBI single before senior David Hayes (Stanton, Ky.) roped a three-run homer and DeMuri came up with the bases loaded and hit a towering grand slam to give QU a 15-3 lead.

DeMuri's two-run blast in the eighth capped the scoring. It was his third homer of the day and seventh of the season. He increased his RBI total to 29 and is now batting .382 on the season.

Senior Mark Niebrugge (Effingham, Ill.) used the big offense and cruised to his third win (3-1) of the season. He allowed three runs in seven innings, striking out five and walking two. Seniors Tommy Hager (O'Fallon, Mo.) and Dalton Doerfler each tossed an inning of relief.

Wehde was a perfect 5-for-5 with a double, two runs and an RBI in the game. DeMuri was 3-for-5 with a triple, a homer, three runs and seven RBI.

The Hawks will hit the road next weekend (April 1-2) for a four-game set at Missouri S&T in Rolla. Quincy has not played away from QU Stadium since Feb. 26.
