Miles Becomes QU's All-Time Hits Leader in Split

QUINCY, Ill. – Senior outfielder Dominic Miles (Quincy, Ill.) became Quincy University's all-time hits leader, recording his 216th career base-hit in Game 1 of a doubleheader against Upper Iowa on Tuesday (March 7) at QU Stadium.

The Hawks claimed an 11-2 win in Game 2 to bounce back from a deflating 10-9 extra-innings defeat to the Peacocks, who came back from a 7-2 deficit in the opener.

Miles entered the day three hits shy of surpassing Mitchell Broughton (2011-14) as the Hawks' all-time hits leader and he did not waste an at-bat on his way to the record. The senior center fielder singled in each of his first three plate appearances, breaking the mark with his 216th career hit on a solid single up the middle in the fourth inning. Last weekend against Emporia State, Miles surpassed his head coach Josh Rabe for second on the all-time list.

In Tuesday's opener, the Hawks took a 4-0 lead in the third inning as senior Jack Klages (St. Louis, Mo.) and Miles singled to lead off the inning and senior Jake Walters (St. Louis, Mo.) followed with a three-run blast to left field. Quincy then got two more singles before sophomore T.J. Tamaccio (Boca Raton, Fla.) lifted a sac fly to right to make it 4-0.

After working around base-runners in the first three innings, QU starter Nick Stroud (Dalton City, Ill.) got touched up for a pair of runs in the fourth on Dominic Hillesheim's inside-the-park home run that deflected off the wall and right fielder Chandler Purcell (Waterloo, Ill.) and all the way into foul territory.

The Hawks scored three more runs in the bottom of the fourth on Walters' two-run triple and a double-steal executed by Walters and junior J.C. DeMuri (Manchester, Mo.).

The Peacocks (2-4) got back in the game with three runs in the sixth before taking the lead with a four-run seventh inning, the big blow coming on Hillesheim's two-run single that gave the visitors an 8-7 lead. Anthony Calton's run-scoring bunt single gave the Peacocks an insurance run.

Junior Troy Wehde (St. Charles, Mo.) delivered a one-out double in the bottom of the seventh before junior Matt Hilmes (Carlyle, Ill.) powered an 0-2 pitch over the wall in right field to tie the game and send it to extras.

The Peacocks took advantage of the Hawks' only error of the game in the top of the eighth to score their go-ahead run. Mitch Moser retired the Hawks in order in the bottom of the inning to clinch the win.

Miles went 3-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored while Walters drove in five runs with a homer and a triple. Purcell and Wehde also had two hits apiece.

Junior Cole Crawford (Wilton, Iowa) was charged with the loss despite not allowing an earned run. Stroud went four innings and gave up two runs on three hits and six walks. He struck out one.

In the nightcap, the Hawks used a balanced lineup and the bullpen's solid performance to earn the split.

Walters again started the scoring in Game 2, sending a 2-1 pitch over the wall in left-center to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead in the first.

Quincy added single runs in the second and third innings with RBIs coming from Klages and freshman Michael Nielsen (Bloomingdale, Ill.) to add to the lead and make it 4-0.

The Peacocks cut the lead in half in the fourth on a two-run double by Luis Ravelo off starter Brock Best (Carthage, Ill.). Junior Brendan Saak (Edwardsville, Ill.) escaped further harm in the inning.

Senior Dalton Doerfler then tossed two perfect innings of relief to bridge the gap through the top of the seventh.

The Hawks broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth, scoring seven runs on three hits, four walks and a hit batsman. Miles and Nielsen each had RBI hits while the other three runs came on bases-loaded walks or hit-by-pitches.

Sophomore Karl Hirsch (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) tossed a clean seventh inning to preserve the victory.

Eight of the Hawks' nine starters had a hit in the game with two each coming from DeMuri, Nielsen and sophomore Carter Naughton (Mundelein, Ill.). Nielsen and Walters drove in three runs each, giving Walters eight RBI on the day.

Doerfler (1-0) earned the win with his two scoreless innings of work while Clayton Lieb was tagged with the loss. Best allowed two runs on three hits and five walks in his 3 2/3 innings of work. He struck out three.

The Hawks will return to action on Thursday (March 9) when they will take on Indianapolis at QU Stadium in a single game beginning at noon. The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday (March 10) at noon. The schedule was adjusted due to impending snow forecasted for the weekend.
