Griskell Pitches Hawks To Season-Opening Split

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team earned a split on its first day at the National Training Center Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. on Monday (March 6) morning. The Hawks opened their season with a 14-6 loss to Cedarville before rebounding for a 5-1 win over NYIT.

The Hawks got an outstanding pitching performance from junior Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg) in Monday's second game to set the tone.

The Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by senior Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) that scored sophomore Jackie Farbak (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way), who started the inning with a base hit.

Quincy (1-1) tacked on four runs on four hits in the second. The Hawks loaded the bases with no outs and Farbak delivered an RBI single to make it 2-0. A run-scoring groundout by junior Raigen Schwartz (Walnut Hill, Ill./Centralia/Kaskaskia CC) added another run before Greene reached on an error to drive in another run. Junior Jessica Poore (Grover, Mo./Eureka/SIUE) capped the rally with a two-out RBI hit.

That offensive outburst was plenty for Griskell, who kept the Bears (4-4) off balance all game. She scattered six hits in a seven-inning complete game, allowing just a single run in the sixth inning. Griskell (1-0) earned the win, striking out one with one walk.

Farbak went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI in the leadoff spot while Greene and Poore each tallied two hits. Greene had a pair of RBI.

Sofia Evangelista (0-2) took the loss for NYIT, allowing four earned runs in the complete game.

In the day's first game, the Hawks dug a first-inning hold and were never able to recover.

Quincy took advantage of two errors in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead, but the Yellow Jackets (3-2) came back to score 10 runs in the first inning.

The Hawks added two more unearned runs in the second inning to make it 10-3. In the fifth, the Hawks scored three runs as Farbak doubled and scored on an error before Greene slugged a two-run homer to make it 11-6.

Cedarville added three runs in the bottom of the fifth to seal the victory.

Senior Tiffany Harbison (Waterloo, Ill.) took the loss for the Hawks, allowing seven runs – only two earned – in 2/3 of an inning. Junior Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.) came on in relief of Harbison.

Laura Eroshevich (1-1) earned the win for the Jackets, allowing six runs – two earned – over five innings.

The Hawks will return to action on Tuesday (March 7) when they battle Grand Valley State (7 a.m. CT) and Ferris State (9:30 a.m. CT) in Clermont, Fla.
