Hawks Drop Two Tuesday Games in Florida

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team dropped a pair of games to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponents on Tuesday (March 7) morning at the NTC Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. The Hawks lost to Ferris State, 10-2, in the opener before No. 7 Grand Valley State staked a 13-5 win later in the morning.

In the opener against the Bulldogs, the Hawks fell behind in the top of the first inning as Ferris rallied for three runs on four hits off starter Kasey Bradley (Waterloo, Ill.).

The Hawks got two runs back in the bottom of the first inning with the aid of two errors. Senior Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) delivered an RBI double that opened the scoring before the second miscue by Ferris State allowed the second run in.

That was all the Hawks could come up with offensively as FSU starter Sam Bates limited the damage to just two hits over the final four innings.

The Bulldogs made it 4-2 in the second inning and broke the game open with a five-run fourth.

Sophomore Jackie Farbak (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way) went 2-for-3 out of the leadoff spot to lead the offense.

Bradley (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing nine runs – only four earned – in 3 1/3 innings pitched. She walked one and struck out one.

In the day's second game, the Hawks and Lakers combined for four home runs with three of them coming in the first inning.

The Lakers (4-5) got on the board with three runs in the top of the first off starter Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg). Teagan Shomin and Ellie Balbach each hit homers to account for the 3-0 lead.

The Hawks (1-3) answered back in the bottom of the inning by taking a 5-3 lead. Farbak reached on an error and scored on Greene's double to left field. Junior Jessica Poore (Grover, Mo./Eureka/SIUE) then scored Greene with a single to right field. After another hit by sophomore Kylie Powers (Oak Forest, Ill.), junior Abby Burton (Springfield, Ill./Glenwood)smacked a three-run homer to give the Hawks a two-run advantage.

Grand Valley got one run back in the second before breaking the game open with seven runs in the third inning to take an 11-5 lead.

The Hawks scattered four hits in the last five innings and stranded nine runners on base in the game.

Senior Tiffany Harbison (Waterloo, Ill.) took the loss, allowing five runs in relief of Griskell. Harbison recorded strikeouts on all five outs she recorded.

Greene was the only QU player with two hits in the game while Poore also reached base twice, going 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.

The Hawks will return to action at 4 p.m. ET when they start a doubleheader at Eckerd at the Tritons' home field in St. Petersburg, Fla.
