Hawks Claim First Win of Spring Over Principia

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's tennis team picked up its first win of the spring season and improved to 4-4 overall with an 8-1 win over host Principia on Thursday (Feb. 9) evening at the Hexburg Tennis Center in Elsah, Ill.

The Hawks won all three matches in doubles play and took five of singles in singles competition.

Senior Amy Kuhle (Decatur, Ill./St. Teresa) and junior Sydney Lynch (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart Griffin) toppled Paige Cooley and Caitlin Carney, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles.

At the second doubles spot, senior Elizabeth Kuenzi (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) and junior Rebecca McIsaac (Fairview Heights, Ill./Belleville East) won in an 8-0 sweep of Anh Vu and Brittany Duke.

Senior Morgan McGinnis (Edwardsville, Ill.) and freshman Rita Kanaeva (Toronto, Canada) won by the same score at No. 3 doubles over Nathalie DeLoach and Zoe Boyman.

All five of the Hawks' wins in singles play came in straight sets. Kuhle won, 7-5, 6-0, over Cooley at the top spot. At No. 2 singles, Kuenzi took out DeLoach without losing a game, 6-0, 6-0.

McIsaac was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Carney while Kanaeva won at the No. 5 spot, 6-1, 6-1, over Duke. McGinnis gave up just one game at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-0, to Hallie Jones.

Lynch was the only player to drop a singles play match, but took Vu to a third-set tiebreak, 6-4, 3-6, 10-5.

The Hawks will return to the courts on Friday (Feb. 10) at 4 p.m. in O'Fallon, Ill. for a doubleheader with the men's team against McKendree.
