Rangers Pull Away in Fourth To Beat Hawks

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's basketball team trailed by one at halftime and four points after three quarters, but UW-Parkside pulled away in the fourth for a 75-61 win in Kenosha, Wis. on Thursday (Feb. 9) night.

The Hawks (5-19, 2-12 GLVC) trailed early in the game, 11-4, but they scored the next eight points as junior forward Anika Webster (Springfield, Ill.) and freshman guard Jessica Merino (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) knocked down a couple 3-pointers before Webster hit two free throws to give QU its first lead of the game.

The Rangers (8-14, 6-8 GLVC) regained the lead just before the end of the quarter on a bucket by Blair Arthur.

In the second quarter, the Hawks tied the game on two occasions, but were not able to get the lead back. Webster's layup with eight seconds remaining cut the deficit to 30-29 at halftime.

The game remained tight early in the second half as two straight baskets by senior guard Lauren Gronewold (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) gave the Hawks a 33-32 lead. The Rangers then pulled ahead by five before senior guard Selina Barnes (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sierra/Southeastern CC) hit a couple free throws and senior guard Nikia Edom (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East/Murray State) knocked down a triple to tie the game at 40-40.

QU had a chance to take the lead on its next trip, but committed a turnover that led to a 3-pointer for Asiah Lawson. The Rangers led by eight late in the third before QU got two free throws from sophomore guard Taylor Hickey (Keokuk, Iowa/Burlington Notre Dame) and a basket Webster to trim the deficit to 48-44 going into the fourth quarter.

Hickey buried back-to-back treys to keep Parkside's lead at 57-52 with 6:42 to play, but the Hawks came up empty on their next five possessions as the Rangers took a double-digit lead to pull away.

Webster was the only QU player in double figures, scoring a season-high 20 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the field. Hickey and Gronewold scored eight points apiece.

Lauren Boerger led the Rangers with 14 points while Olivia Montague added 11.

The Hawks shot 39 percent (22-for-57) from the field while the Rangers connected at a 48 percent (28-for-58) clip. Both teams hit seven 3-pointers. UWP had a 39-30 edge on the glass and the Rangers capitalized with a 18-7 advantage in second chance points.

The Hawks will now battle Lewis (19-5, 11-3 GLVC) on Saturday (Feb. 11) in Romeoville, Ill. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
