Flyers Race Past Hawks Despite 11 3-Pointers

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's basketball team ran into a buzzsaw on Saturday (Feb. 11) afternoon as Lewis raced to a 26-11 lead after one quarter on its way to a sixth straight win, 77-55, at Neil Carey Arena in Romeoville, Ill.

The Hawks (5-20, 2-13 GLVC) matched a season high with 11 3-pointers, including a 9-for-19 mark in the second half, but it was not enough to keep up with the Flyers (20-5, 12-3 GLVC).

Quincy did not have an answer for Jessica Kelliher, who led the Flyers with 29 points and seven rebounds while shooting 12-for-15 from the field.

The Hawks trailed by a 45-18 margin at halftime, but picked up their scoring pace in the second half as they started to hit from long range. Senior guard Rachel Ruzevich (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg/Moraine Valley CC) led the Hawks with 14 points and went 4-for-7 from 3-point range.

Senior guard Lauren Gronewold (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) tacked on 13 points and hit three 3-pointers. Junior forward Anika Webster (Springfield, Ill.) scored eight points and senior guard Nikia Edom (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East/Murray State) scored seven points to go with four rebounds and three assists, playing in her hometown.

The Flyers limited the Hawks to a 33 percent (19-for-57) mark from the floor, while shooting 49 percent (28-for-57) for themselves. Lewis went 17-for-17 from the free throw line and had a 37-30 lead on the glass. QU was held to six points in the paint.

The Hawks will return to Pepsi Arena on Thursday (Feb. 16) at 5:15 p.m. when they take on Rockhurst.
