Rockhurst Pulls Away From QU In Second Half

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's basketball team dropped a 68-56 decision to Rockhurst in Great Lakes Valley Conference action on Thursday (Feb. 16) night at Pepsi Arena.

While Quincy (5-21, 2-14 GLVC) took care of the basketball, turning the ball over just nine times, the hosts were not able to hit shots consistently, shooting 32 percent (19-for-60) from the field.

Rockhurst (17-7, 11-5 GLVC) took an early 8-2 lead before senior guard Nikia Edom (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East/Murray State) hit back-to-back 3-pointers. Another triple by junior forward Anika Webster (Springfield, Ill.) tied the game again at 11-11, but RU closed the first quarter on an 8-2 run to take a 19-13 lead.

Quincy still trailed by nine, 39-30, at halftime after a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by freshman guard Jessica Merino (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg).

QU cut the deficit to two points early in the second half as Edom kicked off a 10-3 run with six straight points on a three-point play and a triple, followed by baskets from senior guard Lauren Gronewold (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) and senior guard Selina Barnes (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sierra/Southeastern CC).

Rockhurst quickly built the lead back to seven points, but Gronewold knocked down a 3-pointer. Quincy hit nine threes in the game. The Hawks are averaging 9.2 triples over their last five games.

After Gronewold's basket, though, the deficit went to double figures and QU never got closer than eight.

Edom led Quincy with 16 points on 6-for-11 shooting. Webster added 12 points as the only other QU player in double figures. Gronewold scored all eight of her points in the second half.

Quincy held Rockhurst to just 40 percent (23-for-58) shooting from the floor, but point guard Jillian Myers was the difference for the visitor, piling up 16 points and 11 rebounds while the GLVC's second-leading scorer Mary Dineen chipped in 21 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Quincy will look to rebound on Saturday (Feb. 18) when they play William Jewell on Senior Day at Pepsi Arena. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. with Senior Day festivities planned for immediately following the game.
