Rough Start Sends Hawks To Defeat On Senior Day

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's basketball team stayed tight with visiting William Jewell, but the Cardinals created separation in the first quarter and never gave up the lead in a 77-69 decision on Senior Day at Pepsi Arena on Saturday (Feb. 18) afternoon.

The Cardinals (13-12, 9-8 GLVC) led by as many as 12 points in the first quarter and held a 23-15 lead going into the second.

After that, the teams played an even game, but it was that early deficit that sent the Hawks (5-22, 2-15 GLVC) to defeat. QU still trailed, 39-27, at halftime – the largest lead of the game for William Jewell.

Senior guard Nikia Edom (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East/Murray State) splashed three straight 3-pointers in the third quarter to help cut the deficit to 56-54 with two minutes left. The Cardinals closed the quarter on a 7-0 run, though, to build the lead back to nine and it never got closer than seven points after that.

Edom led the Hawks with 17 points on 6-for-13 shooting, hitting five 3-pointers. Sophomore forward Sarah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis.) scored 11 points and had seven rebounds and three assists. Each member of the starting five had three assists. Freshman forward Alexa Low (Beavercreek, Ohio) added 11 points and senior guard Lauren Gronewold (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) had 10 points. Senior guard Selina Barnes (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sierra/Southeastern CC) had seven points, eight rebounds and three assists.

The Hawks shot 44 percent (27-for-62) from the field while the Cardinals hit at a 51 percent (28-for-55) clip.
