Hawks Hit The Glass, But Truman Closes Out Win

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Quincy University women's basketball team saw its season come to a close on Thursday (Feb. 23) night with a narrow 68-63 defeat at Pershing Arena.

The Hawks (5-23, 2-16 GLVC) pounded the glass to a 45-34 advantage and led in second chance points 15-6, but they could not keep up shooting the ball, hitting just 34 percent (22-for-64) from the field. The Bulldogs (15-12, 10-8 GLVC) connected at a 41 percent (23-for-56) rate.

Quincy trailed for much of the first quarter, but got a couple late 3-pointers by senior guards Selina Barnes (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sierra/Southeastern CC) and Nikia Edom (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East/Murray State) to help the Hawks take a 31-26 lead into halftime.

The Hawks struggled coming out of the gate in the second half as the Bulldogs went on a 9-0 run to open the third quarter and take a 35-31 lead. The Hawks never got the lead back, though they had chances late to tie the game.

A 3-pointer by senior guard Lauren Gronewold (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) cut Truman's lead – which had been as high as 12 – down to just three, 62-59, with two minutes to play.

The Hawks then got a stop on the defensive end, but an offensive foul gave the ball back to the Bulldogs, who hit two of their next four free throws to push the lead to 64-59.

Edom then scored on a layin with 45 seconds left, but Rachel Edmundson cleaned up a miss on the other end to make it 66-61 with 16 seconds remaining. Senior guard Rachel Ruzevich (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg/Moraine Valley CC) hit a couple free throws on the Hawks' next possession, but Sloane Totta hit two for Truman to ice the game.

Senior forward Cha Cha Williams (Bolingbrook, Ill./Seton Hill) led the Hawks with 13 points and nine rebounds while Barnes collected a double-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Junior forward Anika Webster (Springfield, Ill.) scored 10 points off the bench while Gronewold chipped in nine points and six rebounds.

Cassidy Clark led the Bulldogs with 26 points on 10-for-18 shooting. Sloane and Edmundson scored 11 points apiece.
